Welcome,
I'm glad you're here.
If you've found this meditation,
You probably know what it's like to live with a mind that scans your body for danger,
A mind that interprets every sensation as a threat.
A headache can never be just a headache,
A moment of fatigue can never just be tiredness.
Every sensation becomes the first sign of something terrible.
I want you to know you are not broken,
You are not crazy,
You are not a hypochondriac.
You have a nervous system that learned somewhere along the way that your body is not safe.
Maybe through illness,
Yours or someone you loved,
Maybe through loss,
Maybe through messages you absorbed so early you can't even remember them.
Whatever the source,
Your mind developed a habit of vigilance.
And while that vigilance may have served you once,
It has become its own kind of suffering.
Today we work with one of the most sacred and powerful mantras in the Vedic tradition,
The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra.
Its name means the great death conquering mantra.
But don't let that frighten you,
This isn't about death,
It's about releasing the fear of death,
The fear of illness,
The fear that your body will betray you.
The mantra calls upon Triambhaka,
The three-eyed one,
Another name for Shiva,
Who sees past the illusions that trap us.
It asks for liberation,
Not from the body,
But from our fearful relationship with it.
The key phrase is Mrityor Moksha Mam Hrithat,
Liberate me from death,
Not from immortality.
In other words,
Free me from my fear of dying so that I can finally live.
This is what health anxiety steals from us,
Not our health,
But our life.
We become so focused on the possibility of illness that we forget to inhabit our aliveness.
Let's begin to shift that today.
Find a comfortable position.
You can sit or lie down,
Whatever allows your body to feel supported.
Close your eyes,
And before we do anything else,
I want you to place one hand on your heart and one hand on your belly.
Feel that,
Your heart beating,
Your breath moving.
Right now,
In this moment,
Your body is doing thousands of things to keep you alive.
It's been doing this since before you were born.
It knows how to heal,
It knows how to regulate,
It knows how to live.
Take a breath and feel your hands rise and fall.
Your body is not your enemy,
Your body is your oldest friend,
The one who has carried you through every moment of your life.
The full Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is OM TRIYAM VAKAM YAJAMAHE It translates as We worship the Three-Eyed One,
Who is fragrant and nourishes all beings.
Like a fruit released from its vine,
May I be liberated from death,
But not from immortality.
The image of a fruit is important.
It doesn't fight or struggle to be released.
When it's ripe,
The vine simply lets it go.
This mantra asks for that kind of natural,
Easeful release from fear.
Today,
We'll work with the first line OM TRIYAM VAKAM YAJAMAHE This alone carries the essence of the practice.
Keep your hands where they are,
And your heart and belly.
As we chant,
Feel the vibration moving through your body.
Let it be a message of safety to every cell.
Listen first,
Then join me.
OM TRIYAM VAKAM YAJAMAHE OM TRIYAM VAKAM YAJAMAHE OM TRIYAM VAKAM YAJAMAHE OM TRIYAM VAKAM YAJAMAHE OM TRIYAM VAKAM YAJAMAHE Keep your hands on your body for another moment.
Feel the warmth beneath your palms.
Feel the life.
Your body heard that mantra.
Every cell received it.
And somewhere deep in your nervous system,
A new message is taking root.
I am safe in this body.
I can trust this body.
I can live in this body.
Health anxiety doesn't disappear overnight.
But each time you practice,
You are building a new relationship.
One based on trust rather than fear.
When the anxious thoughts come,
And they will come,
You now have something to return to.
A sound,
A vibration,
A reminder that you are more than your fear.
Place your hands together at your heart.
Take a deep breath of gratitude for this body that carries you.
OM TRIYAM VAKAM YAJAMAHE Gently open your eyes when you are ready.
