This is a guided practice for meditating on the Medicine Buddha,

A Buddha form that,

In Mahayana Buddhism,

Represents the qualities of universal healing,

Harmony,

Purification,

And wholesomeness.

Depending on your personality and understanding,

You can perceive Medicine Buddha as a manifestation of the universal love and compassion,

As the embodiment of your own natural potential,

Or as all that and more.

Begin the meditation by taking a moment to relax your body,

Speech,

And mind.

Your body needs to be relaxed and calm,

Soothed by the contact with the stability of the earth and its own inner stillness.

Your speech is resting in effortless silence.

Your mind is naturally spacious,

As it temporarily lets go of the past and future,

And simply abides in its ability to be aware.

Then take a moment to awaken loving-kindness towards your own body and mind.

Generate a sincere wish for your body to be comfortable,

Safe,

Happy,

And healthy.

Generate a wish for your mind to be balanced,

Wise,

Loving,

And skillful.

Feel that the practice you are about to do is a natural extension of this wish,

And then also extend this love to others.

May your loved ones,

And eventually all beings without exception,

Be free from suffering and truly happy.

Think.

I am undertaking this practice in order to heal my own body and mind,

And bring about the healing of the world and every being in it.

Now focus on your own body.

Recognize its position,

Its shape,

Its unique history.

Your body is a dependently arising phenomenon,

And it has been subject to numerous sources of influence,

Which include your mind,

And the external environment.

For this reason,

Your body might partly reflect some of the mental qualities associated with lack of ease,

Tension,

Fear,

Dullness,

Hatred,

Neurotic desire,

And so on.

For this reason,

Some parts of your body might be tense or heavy,

As if you were carrying a heavy burden.

Take a moment to recognize how your body feels in this moment.

As you breathe naturally,

Imagine and feel that the enlightening influence of awakened beings and your own pure nature flows into your body.

Each in-breath draws in the lightness and movement of the air element and its ability to transform.

You can also imagine breathing in rainbow light that saturates all the parts of your body.

Now focus on the fact that your body consists of numerous cells.

Although the cells might usually feel like they are burdened by the challenges of daily life,

They can also reflect the positive qualities of your own pure potential.

So imagine that each cell gets filled with rainbow light and becomes a pure universe,

At the center of which abides the Medicine Buddha,

A shining figure made of blue light and sitting on a lotus and moon disc.

Medicine Buddha abides in the posture of perfect stability and calm.

His right hand holds an aruru plant on his right knee.

His left hand holds a bowl full of healing nectar on his lap.

He is wearing the threefold monastic robe and manifesting the aspect of simplicity and peace.

Take a moment to imagine that every cell of your head is a shining universe with the Medicine Buddha at heart.

Every cell in your neck is a shining universe where Medicine Buddha abides.

Every cell in your upper torso and your hands is a shining universe where Medicine Buddha abides.

Every cell in your abdomen is a shining universe where Medicine Buddha abides.

Every cell in your pelvis,

Legs,

And feet is a shining universe where Medicine Buddha abides.

As you breathe,

Each and every Medicine Buddha in those cells constantly emanates the light of love,

Compassion,

Wisdom,

And complete healing.

This light eliminates all the afflictions,

All the negative karma,

Illnesses,

Negative influence from outside,

And all the obstacles.

Blissful,

Warm,

And soothing in nature,

This light saturates your entire body and then also goes beyond,

Reaching out to all the sentient beings.

This light also reaches all the other Medicine Buddhas in your body and makes all of them experience great joy.

Continue breathing naturally.

When this warm light touches the darkness of your mental and physical problems,

It completely and instantly dispels it.

If you want,

You might also recite the Medicine Buddha mantra,

Tayatā-ombekanze-bekkanze-mahabekanze-rādze-samutkate-soha.

If you recite the mantra,

Imagine that each Medicine Buddha in your body recites this mantra together with you.

Now take a few moments to feel that as your body is completely saturated with this enlightening influence,

Waves of light strongly reach out to all the other beings around,

All the beings in the universe.

They affect and heal them in the same way,

And along with that,

The whole environment gets transformed.

All signs of pollution and degeneration get dispelled,

And the elements of the outer universe become a manifestation of compassion and wisdom.

Let go of the visualization for a few moments and simply let your awareness rest unmoved and natural.

Now think about all the positive imprints you have just created by doing this practice.

Mentally dedicate this merit by thinking.

Due to all the merit I have just created,

All the merit of the past,

The present,

And the future,

May the wish-fulfilling altruistic intention of Bodhicitta,

Cherishing other sentient beings and letting go of selfishness,

Be generated in my own heart and within the hearts of all sentient beings,

Right now.

And may the Bodhicitta that is already generated be increased forevermore.

Due to all the merits created in the past,

Present,

And future,

May all beings be completely liberated from their disease,

Obstacles,

And mental afflictions,

And may all of them reach the fully awakened state of Medicine Buddha.

Due to this merit,

When this life ends,

May we attain the rebirth in the land of great bliss Sukhavati,

In order to bring all beings to that same enlightened field.

Very powerful visualization! My only suggestion would be to include the actual Medicine Buddha chant in the meditation as well. I appreciate that you included it in the notes so those who don’t know it can learn it. Thank you!
