God Our Mother

God is not a man or a woman. Yet for centuries in Christianity, we’ve been given primarily masculine images of the divine. The Bible, and in particular the Hebrew Scriptures, show many feminine images of God, and in many of them, God is seen as a mother. Feminine and specifically maternal images say something true about God and my experience with God, and I offer you this meditation as a chance to reflect on these images as seen in scripture. “I am at peace like a baby with my mother.” When I was meditating on those words, my mind opened up to the generations of my foremothers who nursed and nurtured my ancestors and on down the line to me with my children. Powerful. Peaceful. Protected.

That was lovely Chelsea. For the first several years that I tried to think of God as mother, the only image I could find in my mind was Allanis Morsette in the movie Dogma 😂. I've had to work to expand the images my mind can draw from and this is great for that.
