You've sat with the ideas of presence,
Of consent,
And of what it means to listen to a place rather than simply just stand in it.
None of that was preparation for a test.
There's no test here.
This is the doing.
So before anything else,
Find where you are.
Not where you're meant to be,
Not where you'll be in a few hours,
Where you are right now in this moment when you're playing this recording.
You may be outdoors on the land itself.
That is my hope.
Perhaps you've got one headphone in and one headphone out,
Kind of walking between realms of audio.
You could be journeying indoors towards a place that you'll visit later or returning to a place that you have been once before and struggled with.
Either is right.
There is no wrong way to begin with this.
Now,
I'm going to ask you gently to tune in to the space.
Even if this is a place that you already know,
Perhaps you walked through it,
You've driven past it.
Even if you've stirred in this exact grind for a hundred times but haven't chosen to tune in.
Because today you're not arriving as you usually do.
You're arriving as a listener.
You're arriving differently.
You're arriving into this land.
In a way that is new to you.
And possibly new to it.
So let's meet this space as a stranger,
Slowly,
Without assumption.
Find yourself a comfy spot,
Perhaps against a tree or a stone or maybe you're choosing to do this in your car because the wind is thrashing and the rain is pouring and you've had to pivot.
There's no right or wrong.
Take a deep breath in and let it go in a timing that feels comfortable and safe to you.
In through the nose perhaps.
And eight through the May.
And allow that feeling of whatever you are holding to loosen.
Nice.
You're here.
And this is all the first part asks of you.
Just to be here.
In presence.
Before we can truly feel a place,
We have to feel ourselves in it.
The body is an instrument and everything you sense from the land will arrive through your body,
Through that vessel,
Through that torch.
So let's tune into that first.
If you're sitting,
Feel the surface beneath you.
If you're standing,
Feel your feet.
Notice the points of contact where you meet the ground or the chair or the blanket and beneath that the earth.
Don't change anything,
Just notice.
Now bring your attention to your feet.
Or the base of your body if you're sitting or lying.
Is there warmth there?
Is there a coolness?
A pressure?
Remember,
There's no wrong or right answer here.
Is just information.
Let your attention travel upward slowly through your ankles,
Your calves,
Your knees.
Thighs,
Hips,
Lower belly.
Notice your breathing moving in this space,
The rise and the fall of your stomach,
Your ribs,
Wherever you feel that breath most.
Continue up through your chest and your shoulders.
Often a place where we hold more than we realise.
And if there's tension there,
Then.
.
.
Just notice it.
Pay attention down your arms,
Your hands.
Are they open or closed?
Resting or gripped tightly?
Up through the neck to the face.
Let your jaw soften if it wants to.
And let your eyes rest.
Whether they are open or closed.
Now you would have already tuned in to how your body felt before you arrived.
Was your baseline when you got up this morning or after your coffee or perhaps before you even got in the car.
You would have tuned in and noticed how you felt.
Now I want you to notice the difference.
Because these connections that we're talking about,
They are the art of noticing.
You're here,
In your body,
On this land.
And that sentence is the whole of the practice.
Everything else is detail.
And it's personal.
Now,
A beginner question I want you to ask yourself.
Not just hear it,
But ask yourself.
What does my body know right now that my mind hasn't caught up to yet?
You don't need necessarily to have an answer.
The question is a doorway.
Not the ring when you're ready and only when you're ready.
Let your attention widen out from the body and into the space around you.
This is where we begin to not just look at the land,
But start listening to it.
If your eyes are open,
Let your gaze soften.
You're not scanning for anything.
You're not looking for something specific.
That simply creates distraction.
We want your eyes to simply rest somewhere in the middle,
In a distance that is often easiest.
Now as you begin to curate your own pattern,
Weave your own threads into how you connect personally with the land.
You have some choices here.
You can pop out your journal.
If you want to make notes,
Or you can simply tune in and trust that you'll remember the things that are.
Meant to be remembered.
And perhaps each time you visit the space it's going to be different.
That's okay.
So let's turn to science.
Besides my voice.
You can pause me.
I won't be offended.
What can you hear?
You don't need to name it yet.
You don't need to judge it as pleasant or unpleasant,
Near or far.
Just let the sound arrive.
We're tuning in a radio station.
And then as we play with that bandwidth,
Is there a sign that is closer to you?
Is there a sound that's furthest away,
Right at the edge of what you can hear?
Now,
Temperature.
And air.
Is there a breeze or a stillness?
Is it warm?
Is it cool?
Does the air feel thick or light,
Heavy or clear?
Maybe even a little sharp.
If you're able to.
And it's the right thing for your space.
Notice the smell.
Earth Water stone,
Quite possibly rain if you're in the UK.
Dust.
What scent can you pick up on?
Now I want you to consider the most simple and honest Locational question.
What does this place feel like it is doing right now?
In this moment,
Not what it looks like,
Not what it means,
What is it doing?
Is it resting?
Is it waking?
Is it holding its breath?
Maybe it's going about its business without you.
It's no wrong answer to this.
There's no answer that you need to justify.
If nothing comes,
Then that's an answer too.
A lot of places take a while to introduce themselves.
This is why we talk so often about presence.
In a non-performative way.
And consistency.
Now I'm going to step back and I'm going to let the land speak for a while without my voice over the top of it.
This isn't.
A dead kind of air.
This isn't a lifeless void.
Even if to begin with it feels like that.
This is the space where listening actually happens.
So stay with your senses,
Stay with the questions we've been asking.
And if your mind wanders,
That's fine.
Just notice where it's wandering to.
And if you find that it wanders too far.
Into the practical to-do lists and so on.
Come back to that place where you can hear,
Feel,
Smell,
Sense and connect.
So you can hit pause and come back if and when you wish to.
Welcome back!
However that felt,
It could have been full or empty or somewhere in between that felt different.
Trust that it was exactly right for you.
There is no correct experience here and a lot of times when you see things online they're going to over-dramatize them and they're going to make them seem as if they are always some ah holier-than-god kind of moment And those do happen,
But.
.
.
They don't happen every day.
Some days it's quiet.
Some days you're simply being asked to just sit with the land.
And both of those places are.
A place of honesty.
And of presence and of curiosity.
End of connection,
Which is what we're here for.
Now,
The heart of this journey.
I want to be clear because this matters.
What we're about to do is an invitation.
It's not a summons.
We're not calling anything forward that doesn't wish to come forward.
We're opening a door and we are standing back from it with respect.
And seeing who or what chooses to approach us.
If nothing is coming into your sight or your vision,
Then that is a complete and valid outcome.
Not every door will open on the first knock,
And this is a practice that we are going to keep returning to.
You can use me as many times as you like on this audio,
Or you can choose to do it next time.
On your own.
As long as you are doing this with safety and respect.
That is all that matters.
So let's build a threshold.
Bring your awareness back to the place around you.
Everything you noticed a minute ago.
The sounds,
The air,
The sense of what this place is doing.
It's my belief that walking between worlds is something that everybody used to do.
Everybody was capable of doing it and it was just a part of existence.
So we're not going to open this in a traditional way.
And I've had to sit with that for a while.
We're not going to do a big ceremony where we invite in all the elements and we're not going to do that.
What we're going to do.
Is we're going to pop you into a little sphere,
Into a little bubble of light.
We're going old school apparently.
In spirit we trust.
So.
As you feel that bubble come up and over you.
It's not blocking your view.
It's not changing the levels of volume around you.
Is energetic.
You can still hear the world,
The world can still hear you.
We're just popping it there so we can open this door.
Now in your own way,
Through breath,
Through quiet spoken word or thought.
I want you to turn your attention.
With intention.
Outward.
And I'd like you to acknowledge that you are a guest here.
So you might say in your own words,
I come as a guest and I ask nothing that isn't freely shared with me.
I bring no harm and I ask for none.
You might say,
Hey,
Newland,
I've just popped by to say hi.
You can make it as dramatic.
As casual as you like.
As long as it has respect underneath it.
Now gently I want you to picture or sense,
If pictures is how it works for you,
The edge of this place.
A hedge line,
Perhaps a fence.
A change in the grind.
A feeling of here and there.
Or here and beyond here.
Somewhere within those edges there's a presence that knows this place better than any visitor ever could.
Some call them a guardian.
Some call them a land steward.
Some will call them the spirit of the land.
An old one,
A keeper,
A threshold walker.
You don't need the right name.
You just need.
To be here in this moment.
And trust that you are safe.
And now if you sense any kind of response,
A change,
A presence,
An image or a feeling,
Even if it's just your attention,
In a particular direction,
That's all you need.
You don't need any more than that.
If you sense nothing at all,
Then that's fine.
Presence is not always about receiving something.
It's about showing up and staying,
Whether or not anything is visible or anything happens.
I want you to.
Consider the flickers in your mind.
Perhaps it's an animal.
Perhaps it's a person?
Perhaps it's not visible to you but you just have a knowing.
And then you're free to ask some questions if you wish.
Who are you to this place?
Maybe.
What do you wish me to know in this first meeting?
What do you ask of me if I return here?
Whatever comes up or doesn't come up.
Nothing here needs to be edited or needs to be scripted.
My hope is that you're going to listen to this once,
Get the gist,
And find your own way.
Which is why this next stretch is yours.
There's nothing more for me to prompt you towards.
If presence has made itself known,
Stay with it in whatever quiet,
Unforced way that feels right and feels safe to you.
If nothing has,
Then stay with the land itself.
Because that's never nothing.
There is no task here.
Only presence.
You can hit pause,
Come back whenever you like.
So there's no rush.
Whenever you're ready,
Begin to let your attention loosen from where it's been resting.
Perhaps you've got some notes in your journal.
Perhaps you drifted off somewhere and you're not exactly aware of where you went.
It has been known to happen.
However that time was spent.
Full of presence,
Of quiet or perhaps a little bit of uncertainty,
It was real and it was yours and that is enough.
Before we closed the door we opened.
And we will close it properly.
You won't be doing that by simply walking away.
But by thanking what we came to meet,
Whether it or they showed itself fully or partly or not at all.
So in your own words,
Or you can use these.
Thank the land.
Thank spirit.
Be grateful.
Thank you for what was given.
Thank you too for what wasn't.
For whatever this place decided wasn't mine to receive today or hear or connect with.
I leave nothing here that isn't mine to leave and I take nothing extra with me.
If anything came to you through this journey,
A word,
An image,
A feeling,
A single sensation,
A color.
Hold it now.
Without needing to understand it yet.
Because I would love to tell you that you can interpret it immediately and maybe you can on some level.
But these things have a way of unfolding and a level of understanding that deepens the further you walk along this path.
You don't have to make meaning of it all in the now.
Some things take days,
Weeks,
Seasons to unfold.
Let this be the beginning of a longer conversation,
Not a single closed exchange.
Because anyone who tells you they can rock up to a space that they have never been before and have a huge activation or a massive download.
Is quite often chatting shit.
The connection that I.
Sea for humanity and for the world is far deeper.
Than performative activations.
And this is what you have began to tune into and work with today.
So from me,
I thank you.
For your devotion.
And if it feels right,
Place a hand on the ground or on your own chest and say,
I will return.
I will return.
Not as a promise that you have to keep perfectly,
But as an intention offered honestly.
To continue to return to the land.
And now we come back.
Not away from the land,
But back into the rest of your day.
Carrying what happened here rather than leaving it behind.
So bring your attention back to your breath again.
Feel the points of contact between your body,
The ground,
The chair.
Perhaps you've already began moving and I'm in one ear of your headphones and you're halfway along the footpath.
That's fine too.
