Before you begin whatever you're about to do,
Let's take a few minutes to check in.
This is not about talking yourself out of the task.
And it's not about deciding what you will be able to do forever.
It's just a pause to notice what is available today.
You might be about to do dishes,
Answer emails,
Work in the yard.
Make dinner,
Run errands,
Care for someone else,
Or start work.
Whatever it is,
You can say the task quietly to yourself now.
Then notice where you are starting from.
You do not have to figure out why your body feels the way it does right now.
You do not have to rate it perfectly.
Just notice.
Maybe pain is already there.
Maybe fatigue is loud today.
Maybe you feel tense,
Rushed,
Or like you need to get a lot done before you can rest.
That is just information.
Now.
Think about the activity itself.
If you were to begin this task in a way that worked with your body today.
What might a manageable first window be?
Maybe it's 5 minutes,
Maybe 10,
Maybe 18 minutes if you already know that is usually a workable amount of time.
And if you don't know yet,
That's okay.
This can be an experiment.
You are looking for a point where you can pause before your body has to yell at you to stop.
You might set a timer a little before pain or fatigue usually really takes off.
Not because you are giving up.
But because you are giving yourself a chance to come back to the task later.
Now think about what you will do when the timer goes off.
Your break does not have to mean sitting there twiddling your thumbs,
Though you can if you want.
But maybe you change positions.
Maybe you sit down to pay a bill,
Return a phone call.
Watch someone you love for a few minutes.
Have a drink of water.
Maybe take a few slow,
Deep breaths.
Or just give your body a break from that particular activity.
Choose one possible break now.
And then decide what will help you check in before you return to the main activity.
Maybe you ask yourself,
Do I need another few minutes?
Or maybe you ask,
Can I do the next round for a shorter amount of time?
Maybe you notice that today is not the day to finish the whole task.
All of these answers are allowed.
The point is not to follow a rigid rule.
The point is to stay in conversation with your body instead of waiting until you have pushed so far that you have no choice but to stop.
If you forget and push past the timer,
That's not failure.
It's just more information for the next time.
So before you begin,
Take one more breath.
You are allowed to start smaller than the part of you that wants to get everything done at once.
And you are allowed to return when you are ready.
