5 Steps To Change, With Practical Compassion

When we consider making or managing changes in our lives we need to create our own personal blend of practical action and deep self-compassion. Often we ignore our inner needs, believing we just need to ‘get on’ - or we can get so lost in our internal stories that actions fall by the wayside. In this short course, we’ll be exploring the 5 Steps that can help us with any change - whether it’s something we’re seeking to create, or something that feels like it’s being thrust upon us. Through the course, we’ll look at how we can shift from limiting thinking into seeing what’s truly possible. We'll see how bringing flexibility to our goals can help us get closer to where we want to be. We’ll understand how change changes - and how our approach to it can change too. We’ll also hear why it’s so important to treat ourselves with kindness. And we’ll learn why asking for, and accepting help can be one of our most compassionate acts. Each day I’ll share one of these steps, along with a brief mindfulness practice and a journaling prompt, for you to extend your own self-reflections.

Lição 1
Step 1: Believe Change Is Possible
Today we explore how our mind can sometimes tell us stories that may limit how we feel toward or about change. We can start to doubt whether anything about our situation could ever change or whether we are capable of making the change we desire. And so Step 1 becomes… believing change is possible. We see how sinking deeper into our inner wisdom - coming out of our thinking mind - helps us access the part of us that can most support us in changing the way we think about change.

Step 2: Work Out What You Want To Change
After establishing our core belief that change is possible, the lesson from Day 1, we need to work out what we want to change. This may seem astonishingly obvious and yet, at times, can sometimes feel so impossibly hard. Today we explore how sometimes it's ok not to know the specifics of what we 'want', but rather it can be more useful to know how we want to 'feel'.

Step 3: Remember What You Want To Change May Change
Day 3 sees us exploring how change changes - and how our approach to it can change too. This theme of non-attachment to a particular outcome helps us to be ready to allow what feels most useful right now. Today we are looking at ways we can bring more ease to the process of change, allowing it to flow, rather than being fixed on ‘the how’ of what happens.

Step 4: Make A Contract Of Compassion With Yourself
This lesson looks at how when we approach change with compassion, we can soften the process. It doesn’t mean we wave a magic wand across our life and all obstacles and challenges fade away. Rather, it means we sit back in our Self a little deeper and notice what is happening, how we’re feeling and tend to what is present with kindness - just as we would care for a much loved friend if we saw they were going through a time of change.

Step 5: Find A Person, Or People, Who Will Walk Beside You As You Find Your Way
We are each of us unique and will go through our lives with our own influences, stories, beliefs and values. And we’ll each experience the changes in our lives in our own individual way. And yet, none of us is an island. We are all human - and we are all interconnected, thriving through our community with others. We know how vital that connection with others is throughout our life - from our first breath to our last. And so, in this last step, we’ll be exploring the value of reaching out and connecting with an other, or others, to support you on your journey.
