Hi there.

Let's take a little walk.

Not just anywhere,

But down a street you know well.

It's our town's 4th of July street fair,

And the air is buzzing with summer magic.

Close your eyes if that feels good.

Take a deep breath in,

And out.

Now picture it.

You're standing at the edge of downtown.

The sky is big and blue.

You hear the happy hum of a crowd.

People laughing,

Talking,

Calling to friends.

Somewhere a kid is squealing with the light on a ride.

The music from the fair stage floats through the air.

Maybe a band tuning up,

Or a local singer's voice echoing down the block.

You take your first steps.

Your shoes crunch on the hot asphalt,

And flags wave gently in the breeze,

While the sun beats down on your shoulders.

The smell of food hits you.

Salty fries,

Buttery popcorn,

Smoky hot dogs on the grill.

And there it is,

That sweet tart scent of lemon shake-ups,

Like sunshine in a cup.

You take a little sip.

Cool,

Sugary,

So refreshing it makes your whole face smile.

You keep walking.

A cotton candy booth spins pink clouds into cones,

And sticky fingers brush against yours as someone hands you a bite.

There's the Boy Scouts fry stand.

Oil sizzling in a giant pan.

Vinegar and salt shaking onto endless orders of fries.

A line of neighbors snakes out from under the tent.

Someone calls your name.

You turn and see a friend from school.

You wave.

Maybe you stop and laugh for a second.

That easy summer kind of laugh.

The sound of the Ferris wheel turning.

Creak,

Creak.

The soft whoosh of breeze blowing between the rides.

Everywhere people are gathered.

Young kids with star tattoos on their cheeks,

And red paper wristbands on their arms.

Teenagers leaning against fences.

Grandparents sipping lemonade on folding chairs.

You belong here,

In this noisy,

Happy,

Sticky,

Perfect mess of a day.

You breathe it all in.

Familiar,

Comforting,

Alive.

Now pause in the street.

Take one more look around.

Let this moment soak into your skin,

Like sunshine and sugar.

And when you're ready,

Wiggle your fingers.

Stretch a little.

Come back to the room you're in,

And know that you can return to the street anytime.

In your mind,

In your breath,

In your heart.
