You must first receive before you can give generously. To give is to receive. Taking and receiving are not the same thing. To receive is to open fully to what is being offered to you — good, bad, brilliant, ugly — with no expectation; with no need for it to be any other way than how it is.

The more receptive a person is,

The more generous they will naturally be.

So if you meet somebody who feels particularly generous of spirit or maybe literally they're just really giving,

Usually,

And this is not always true of course,

But usually they're a very receptive person and they have received at such a level that they cannot help but give out to keep the energy moving.

But it's actually quite a rare quality to see and one of the things that I find is that when you learn about this and you understand what taking looks like,

It's a lot easier to pay attention to how to be in the world governed by gratitude for each experience as though all of experience is a gesture of love.

But you first need to receive everything as love and to receive everything as love requires you to not be attached to anything.

And so then you have these principles of non-dualism and you have these principles of non-attachment because we can get unhinged if someone says the wrong word,

Right?

You guys have experienced this before.

Someone says something in a particular way and we just get stuck on it.

And we don't receive it as love,

We receive it as a complete assault.

And it's just a word.

And we live in this transactional environment where you scratch my back,

I scratch yours,

Sort of thing.

But how do you live in the world such that,

Because it's true that we are consuming,

In a way we're consuming one another all the time,

But how do you do so without taking?

And the answer is gratitude and receptivity.
