Morning Prayers for Wednesday, November 4 - Election Day in the United States. Simple morning prayers in the Christian tradition using modern and inclusive language. The prayers are liturgical and repetitive, but each day the scripture reading and prayer focus changes. I invite you to join in this simple daily practice with others around the world. Good morning.

Today is Wednesday,

November 4th,

2020.

Oh Lord,

Let my soul rise up to meet you as the day rises to meet the sun.

Glory to God,

The three-in-one creator,

Redeemer,

And sustainer.

As it was in the beginning,

Is now and will be forever.

Amen.

Come let us bow down and worship.

Let us kneel before the Lord,

Our maker.

Remind yourself that you're in God's presence.

Notice how God may be speaking to you today.

Let yourself dwell on a word or phrase that jumps out at you and let your heart respond to God in prayer.

Please repeat these words.

You order your kingdom with justice and establish the world in peace.

Psalm 12.

Help,

O Lord.

No one is loving anymore.

Faithfulness has vanished from the peoples.

Neighbor lies to neighbor.

Their words are smooth and duplicitous.

May the Lord destroy all smooth talkers,

Every boastful tongue,

And those who say we can talk our way out of anything.

We know just how to twist our words so that no one challenges us.

Because they oppress the helpless.

Because poor people sigh and moan.

Now I will rise up,

Says the Lord.

The promises of the Lord are flawless,

Like refined silver,

Freed from dross,

Purified seven times over.

You,

O Lord,

Will keep us safe and protect us always from this generation,

Where corrupt people strut proudly around and the scum of the earth hold high office.

Please repeat these words.

You order your kingdom with justice and establish the world in peace.

Since it's election week here in the United States,

We are praying for our country.

So,

I invite you now to hold your country,

Your nation before God,

Whatever country that may be.

And as you hold your country before God,

Don't worry about diagnosing your country's complicated needs or telling God what to do.

Simply hold your country before the Lord and hear the words of this prayer.

Almighty God who has given us good land for our heritage,

We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will.

Bless our land with honorable industry,

Sound learning in pure manners.

Save us from violence,

Discord and confusion,

From pride and arrogance,

And from every evil way.

Defend our liberties and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues.

And do with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy name we entrust the authority of government,

That there may be justice and peace at home,

And that through obedience to thy law we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth.

In the time of prosperity,

Fill our hearts with thankfulness,

And in the day of trouble,

Suffer not our trust in thee to fail,

All which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Our Father which art in heaven,

Eternal God,

Earth maker,

Pain bearer,

Life giver,

Source of all that is and all that shall be,

Not only Father but Mother of us all,

May the hallowing of your name echo through the universe.

May the way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world.

May your heavenly will be done by all created beings.

May your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth.

With the bread we need for today,

Feed us.

In the hurts we absorb from one another,

Forgive us.

In times of temptation and test,

Strengthen us.

From trials too great to endure,

Spare us.

From the grip of all that is evil,

Free us.

For you reign in the glory of the power that is love now and forever.

Amen.

And now my friends,

May the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ go with you wherever he may send you today.

May he guide you through the wilderness,

Protect you through the storm.

May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you.

May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

Go in peace.
