Drift into rest.
A sleep meditation.
Tonight is not about fixing yourself,
Not about doing more,
Or not about carrying the weight of the world a little longer.
Tonight is about returning.
Returning to stillness.
Returning to softness.
Returning home to yourself.
Welcome.
My name is Carly from the Zen Lotus,
Here in the Highlands of Scotland,
And this meditation is your permission to rest deeply,
To let the nervous system soften,
To allow the mind to quiet,
And to remember that rest is not something you earn,
It is something we all deserve.
So now,
Finding a comfortable position,
Allowing the body to fully settle lying down,
Preparing for a deep sleep.
Eyes closed,
Or holding a soft gaze,
Whichever feels comfortable to you.
Perhaps you are beneath warm blankets,
Perhaps with your hands resting gently by your sides.
And when you are ready,
Take a slow,
Deep breath into the nose,
And sigh it out through the mouth.
Then,
Breathing in slowly,
And exhaling fully.
There is nowhere else you need to be.
Nothing else you need to solve tonight.
For now,
In this moment,
You are safe,
You are held,
And you can rest.
Begin by noticing the support beneath you,
The steadiness of the bed,
The quietness of the room around you.
Allow the body to recognise that in this moment,
You are safe here.
Now bring awareness to your breathing.
No need to force it,
Simply observe.
Now we will softly slow the breath together,
Breathing in for 4,
1,
2,
3,
4,
Holding softly for 2,
And exhaling for a count of 6,
2,
3,
Inhale for 4,
Pause gently,
And exhale for 6.
Longer exhales signal safety to the body,
They tell the nervous system that it no longer needs to stay alert.
Soften now,
You can let go.
One more breath together,
Inhale deeply for 4,
And exhale slowly to allow the breath to return to a natural rhythm.
With every exhale,
Imagine yourself floating gently downward,
As though you were drifting deeper into softness,
Deeper into stillness.
Nothing forced,
Nothing rushed,
Just slowly descending into rest.
Feel the body becoming heavier now,
More supported,
More relaxed,
As though the bed beneath you is gently holding every part of you.
Now bring awareness to the left side of the body,
The left shoulder softening,
The right arm becoming heavy,
The left hand relaxing completely.
Now gently shifting awareness to the right side,
The right shoulder softening,
The right arm heavy and relaxed,
The right hand letting go,
Completely.
Now the left leg softening,
The left foot relaxed,
Heavy,
The right foot softening deeply,
Supported,
Supported.
Bring awareness now to the top of the head,
Softening the scalp,
Relaxing the forehead,
Let the space between the brows smooth and soften.
The cheeks,
The jaw,
Let the tongue rest softly in the mouth.
Now the neck,
The shoulders,
Allowing them to drop away from the ear,
The ears.
Feel the chest soften,
The heart space expanding gently with the breath.
Now the belly,
Allowing it to rise naturally,
No tension,
Just softness,
Just ease.
And with every breath out,
Feel yourself floating a little deeper,
Drifting towards a peaceful rest.
As though the mind is quieting further with every exhale.
Above you a golden soft light,
It is warm and peaceful.
This light carries calmness over the body,
Melting tension as it moves.
Let the light continue through the chest and heart.
Moving into the belly,
Now imagining yourself resting beside a quiet sea at night,
The waves moving slowly in,
The rhythm steady,
Peaceful.
As you breathe,
Your breath begins to move like the tide in,
Nothing forced,
Just gentle rhythm.
If thoughts arise,
Let them drift.
Clouds moving across the night sky,
There is no need to follow them,
No need to hold them.
You're simply returning to your breath,
Returning to rest within yourself.
Repeat,
I release this day,
I am safe to rest.
My body knows how to sleep and can soften now.
Pause here for a few slow breaths,
Imagining yourself wrapped in deep,
Restored,
Recharging quietly while you sleep.
Your only job now is to rest.
Before we close,
I leave you with these beautiful words from Thomas Jefferson,
Sleep is the golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.
Let those words gently settle into the heart.
You are worthy of rest.
You are worthy of peace.
Sleep now,
Knowing that you are supported.
