Welcome to Restful Journeys.
I will be reading a story based on the game Fallout.
Relax and listen while we follow Cole to help rescue settlers that went missing.
Please find a comfortable place to sit or lie down and relax.
Allow the soft spoken words to bring you to a peaceful rest.
Let's begin.
The atom bomb had long since done its dirty work,
Leaving the wasteland a poisoned shell of the world we once knew.
Cole Walker was born into these blasted badlands,
The radiation coursing through his veins like everybody else.
Only Cole heard whispers the others couldn't,
Crawled places no man should.
His ma said he was a bit touched,
But the overseer knew different.
Cole had the sight.
When three settlers went missing near the glowing sea,
The town folk were too scared to investigate,
But Cole,
He saw their faces in his dreams calling for help.
So when night fell he strapped on his cobbled armor and ventured into the wasteland alone.
What he found out there would shake foundation to its irradiated core.
Someone or something was snatching folks from their sleep and it had a taste for human flesh.
The glow of the Geiger counter was Cole's only guide through the heavy fog.
With each crackle and pop he ventured deeper into the heart of the glowing sea.
The radiation burned his lungs,
But he pushed on.
Those folks were counting on him.
As the dark closed in,
Cole spied a flickering light in the distance.
He drew his 10mm pistol and slowed his approach.
Peeking through the haze,
He spotted a ramshackle shack built onto the husk of an old gas station.
A lantern hung just inside the open doorway,
Casting shadows into the wasteland night.
Cole held his breath and listened.
At first,
Nothing but the whistle of the hot wind,
Then he heard it,
A low moan drifting through the fog.
He stilled his nerves and burst inside,
Gun raised.
The only thing to find was the missing settlers huddled together in a cell of salvaged fencing.
They were sickly and scared,
But.
.
.
What in the hell happened?
Cole asked.
Just then,
A deep growl rumbled through the ruins.
Cole spun with his gun raised,
But the fog was too thick to see more than a few feet in front of him.
Whatever was out there,
It had a voice like an angry death claw.
The settlers trembled behind their cage.
Please,
Mister,
Get us out of here.
One man stammered.
Cole holstered his pistol and examined the lock.
It was recently oiled,
Professional work.
Stay close,
He warned.
With a twist and a click,
The gate swung open.
A fire had been laid in a rusty oil drum,
Barely holding back the dark.
Cole handed the settlers his canteen and ran away.
Drink up,
I'll deal with Fido out there.
Just then,
A flashlight beam cut through the ruins.
Hands where I can see them,
Wastelander,
Boomed a scratchy voice.
Cole raised his palms,
Squinting against the glare.
A figure emerged from the fog,
An imposing man in power armor,
Laser rifle in his massive grip.
You're on my property,
Friend,
The stranger said.
Start talking before I start blasting.
Cole's mind raced through the possible explanations as the laser rifle idled in the stranger's grip.
One wrong word and they'd all be atomized.
Just doing a good turn for some folks in trouble,
Cole said,
Slow and steady.
No need for violence,
Mister.
We can sort this out peacefully.
The armored man peered at the cowering settlers through his visor.
At last,
He powered down the rifle with a metallic whirr.
Name's Ruck.
This land's been in my family for generations.
Cole breathed easy again.
I'm Cole Walker,
Pleased to meet you,
If the circumstances were different.
His eyes flitted past Ruck.
Was that movement in the fog?
Just then,
A scream pierced the night.
The last settler stumbled into view,
Dragging a gory wound across his middle.
Before he collapsed,
He rasped,
It's still out there.
Monster got Earl.
In a flash,
Cole drew his pistol and Ruck shouldered his rifle.
Side by side,
They scanned the ruins.
They spotted two glowing orbs staring back at them.
The glowing eyes stared back,
Unblinking,
As the fog swirled around its hulking form.
Whatever this monster was,
It was big and smart.
It had picked off those settlers one by one,
Storing them in the shack for later.
Ruck steadied his laser rifle.
Keep your eyes sharp,
Walker,
And stay behind me.
Cole nodded,
Thumbing back the hammer on his pistol.
This was Ruck's land and he knew it best.
Together they started forward,
Scouring the ruins for any sight of the beast.
The Geiger counter crackled.
They were nearing a particularly eradicated patch of wasteland.
Through the static,
Cole heard it,
A low,
Guttural growl rising to a roar.
The monster charged out of the fog,
Massive jaws agape.
It was a mutated deathclaw,
At least twice the size of any Cole had seen before.
Ruck opened fire,
His laser sending green bolts into its armored hide.
Cole took aim,
Squeezed off a couple of shots,
Catching it in the eye.
It howled in pain,
But kept coming.
The behemoth deathclaw bore down on Cole and Ruck,
Fast,
Impervious to their shots.
Cole rolled aside as it swiped,
Its claws tearing through the power armor like tissue.
Ruck blasted away,
But it was no use.
The thing just kept coming.
They backed against the ruined walls,
Out of options.
But then,
Through the rattle of gunfire,
He peered through the fog and almost couldn't believe his eyes.
It was Dogmeat,
His trusty companion,
Charging to join the fray.
He leapt,
Sinking his teeth deep into the deathclaw's throat.
It reared back with a howl,
Trying to shake the mud off.
Now,
While it's distracted,
Cole yelled to Ruck.
They both took aim at its exposed underbelly and let loose hellfire.
With an ear-splitting shriek,
The behemoth crashed to the earth,
Dogmeat tumbling free.
The fog was clearing as they caught their breath.
Cole turned to Ruck with a new understanding in his eyes.
This ain't the first monster you've had to deal with out here,
Is it friend?
Ruck removed his helmet with a hiss,
Revealing a worn but determined face.
There's a reason this place is called the Glowing Sea,
He said darkly.
Radiation does more than just kill flesh,
It twists life into mad new forms.
Cole knelt by the fallen deathclaw,
Examining the mutations that had warped its body.
This was no natural beast.
Someone's experimenting out here,
Cole said grimly,
Pushing radiation and biology to their limits.
Just then,
Dogmeat's ears pricked up.
He trotted to the shack and started digging frantically.
Cole joined him and unearthed a hatch set into the earth.
There's more going on beneath the surface,
Cole said to Ruck.
Ruck shouldered his rifle.
Reckon this is as far as I go,
Friend,
But I'd be obliged if you put an end to whoever's warping my land.
With a nod,
Cole descended into the radioactive bowels of the earth,
Dogmeat close behind.
What horrors could Cole unearth in the subterranean lab?
A sinister scientist?
And could they survive long enough to stop their unholy experiments for good?
Cole thought there is only one way to find out.
Dogmeat and Cole crept through the rusted tunnels,
Every sense on high alert.
The Geiger counter crackled like machine gun fire.
The radiation down there was thick as soup.
Finally,
A dim glow emanated ahead.
Cole peered into a massive chamber and what he saw almost stopped his heart.
Mutated abominations in cages stitched together from pieces of different creatures.
And at the center,
A man in a radiation suit manipulating their corrupted cells.
The scientist heard them and he suddenly spun syringe in hand.
What are you doing down here?
He snapped.
But Cole recognized that voice.
It was Dr.
Kaufman,
Head scientist at the local vault.
Before Cole could react,
Dogmeat lunged forward with a snarl.
Kaufman plunged the syringe,
But Dogmeat's jaw clamped on his arm,
Twisting till the bone snapped.
The mad doctor howled,
Dropping his twisted experiments to cower against the wall.
With the flick of a switch,
The chamber began to self-destruct.
Cole grabbed Kaufman and fled through the closing passages,
Explosions nipping at their heels.
They burst into the fading sunlight,
The earth collapsing behind them.
Rook saw them from a distance and smiled as the wasteland swallowed that evil place forever.
The glowing sea and its monsters were no more.
Justice was served.
But the radioactive scars on that land would last for generations to come.
Thank you for listening to this fallout journey.
I hope it helped you relax and hopefully fall into a peaceful sleep.
