After Waking From A Nightmare: 10 Minutes To Steady Yourself
Woke from a nightmare or bad dream with your heart pounding? Start here. This 10-minute grounding practice begins straight away. For night panic, 3am anxiety, or waking scared and unable to settle. Your eyes stay open. There's nothing to picture and you won't be asked about the dream — after a nightmare, closing your eyes and imagining is the wrong direction. Instead, a gentle orienting exercise: look around the real room, let your senses find what's actually there, and let your breathing slow on its own. It won't put you back to sleep in six minutes, and it isn't trying to. The fear and panic fade over 10–15 minutes as adrenaline clears. This is just company while it does. For something longer, try 3am and Wide Awake. Disclaimer: If nightmares are frequent or linked to trauma or PTSD, Imagery Rehearsal Therapy is a well-evidenced treatment for recurring nightmares. Please ask your doctor. This practice is for the moment after — it isn't a treatment.
