What is nervous system regulation and why is it so important?
So put simply,
Nervous system regulation is our body's ability to adjust and adapt to what's happening around us at any given time.
So think about it,
You might have received an unexpected bill,
You have an argument with someone,
You get stuck in traffic or you've just got a lot going on.
And before you've even had time to think about it,
Your body can start responding.
So your heart can beat faster,
Your breathing changes,
Your muscles tighten and your mind can start racing.
That's your nervous system doing its job.
And it's not necessarily,
It's not a bad thing.
But we,
And we need our nervous system to respond to stress.
So if you're running away from danger,
You want your body to become more alert.
You don't want it to be relaxed.
But here's where it gets interesting.
Once that danger or that stressful situation has passed,
Your body needs to be able to settle back down again.
And that's what nervous system regulation is all about.
So it's not about being calm all the time.
It's about being able to move between different levels of activity depending on what life throws at us and the problem is many of us spend so much of our times rushing worrying think about what's happening next that we don't give ourselves enough opportunity to recover and over time That can affect our sleep,
Our moods,
Our energy levels,
And even how we experience pain.
So how can we support our nervous system?
Well,
Sometimes it's surprisingly simple,
Just slowing down,
Taking a few gentle breaths,
Going for a walk,
Practicing mindfulness,
Or just simply allowing ourselves to rest without feeling guilty.
And something I always like to remind people is that we don't need to remove all stress from our lives because it's not going to happen.
Stress has a purpose.
It helps us respond to challenges.
It helps us grow and it helps us build resilience.
But we also need recovery and that's what the everyday yin,
That's what that's all about.
So finding those little moments throughout our day where we can slow down and just create a little bit more balance because Nervous system regulation isn't about being relaxed all day,
It's about having the flexibility to respond when we need to and recover when we can.
