The search for external sources of joy might be what prevents us from feeling the underlying joy of being. Searching keeps our minds fixed on external objects and experiences. Looking for something outside of ourselves takes us away from seeing that joy is already present within us. Our willingness to experience mild to moderate stress and negative emotions builds our ability to bounce back from unpleasant situations. Welcoming lower levels of stress helps protects us from being overwhelmed by higher levels of stress. And, regularly experiencing joy will vaccinate us against being overwhelmed by higher levels of stress. iRest Practice 23: Enhancing Joy from the iRest Program for Healing PTSD: A Proven Effective Approach to Using Yoga Nidra Meditation & Deep Relaxation Techniques to Overcome Trauma. Written by Richard C. Miller, PhD. Recorded by Erin Finck, TCTSY-F, RYT 500, Level 1 iRest Teacher
