This exercise is called the Light Stream Technique.
It's really a modification of an ancient yoga exercise.
And it's great to help develop somatic awareness.
We'll begin by thinking about a distressing issue that might be coming up in your life.
We don't want it to be too disturbing,
But something that definitely brings up sensations in your body of discomfort.
Now just notice whatever that issue is,
And then pay attention to the body sensations that accompany those thoughts.
If you're having any difficulty accessing any of those sensations,
You can do a quick body scan.
One way to do that is to envision a blank screen and just scan your body from feet to head,
Noticing any body sensations that may arise.
This is an exercise that uses imagination.
There's no right or wrong way to do it.
So now concentrate on those feelings in your body.
If the feeling had a shape,
What would it be?
And if it had a size,
What would that be?
If the feeling had a color,
What would it be?
And if it had a temperature,
What would that be?
If the feeling in your body had a texture,
What would that be?
And what kind of sound would it make?
You don't have to make the sound,
Just describe it in your mind,
Which is high pitched or low pitched or something else.
Now that you have more of a sense in your imagination of what this feeling would be like in your body,
Think about which of your favorite colors you might associate with healing.
If it's the same as the feeling of the color in the body,
Choose a different one.
And once you have that color in mind,
Imagine that this favorite colored light is coming in through the top of your head and directing itself at the shape in your body.
Let's pretend that the source of this light is just out in the cosmos,
The universe.
The more you use,
The more is available.
It's an unlimited resource.
Just picture the light directing itself at the shape in your body and penetrating and permeating it,
Resonating and vibrating in and around it.
As this light is streaming in,
Vibrating,
Resonating,
Permeating,
Penetrating the shape in your body,
What happens to the shape?
Does anything change its size or color or any other qualities?
Continue to notice what happens when you visualize this light streaming down from above into your body and interacting with the shape.
Notice any shifts,
Any transformation.
As the light continues to direct itself to that area,
You can allow the light to come in and gently and easily fill your entire head,
Gently and easily.
Now allow it to descend through your neck,
Into your shoulders and down your arms,
Into your hands and out your fingertips.
Now allow it to come down your neck and into the trunk of your body easily and gently.
Now allow it to descend through your buttocks into your legs,
Streaming down your legs and flowing out of your feet.
Know that you can repeat this activity at any time to create a sense of calm and relaxation.
Now slowly come out to become more awake and aware on the count of five.
One,
Two,
Three,
Four,
Five.
Let's come back into the room.
Notice my voice.
Notice your body against the chair.
And when you're ready,
Open your eyes.
