Sound Bath Sessions 283: Estelle Lum
Though I wanted to stay and talk more with Emily, I had to get to my next recording with Estelle Lum. Estelle picked me up and we drove to her place. We arrived at a small house where she usually holds group sessions. It was cozy inside with her instruments placed around the space filled with carpets and pillows instead of furniture. Estelle would play an epic one-hour-long session that included pretty much every instrument she had. Each part was as soulful as the last. She began with the louder gong and shamanic drum chanting with her powerful voice. When transitioning between instruments, she would whistle very realistic bird calls that made me lift my headphones to see if there was actually a bird in the space! Such a playful element. After the bowls, she played a large chime harp around the microphone. Her style was playful and dynamic, and much like our conversations, it was filled with her heart and self. A beautiful sonic self-portrait.
