I didn’t have time to record Yeyette on my last visit to Manila but vowed to return. One year later I returned to her space, Oyayi Studio, where she holds her sessions. Oyayi is located in a quiet neighborhood of Quezon City in north Manila on ‘Mapagmahal’, or ‘loving person’, Street which is a fitting word that describes her. A bamboo ‘Bonkaka’ or ‘buzzer stick’ was used to introduce the first session with a heartbeat rhythm that gradually slowed until the crystal bowls began. This was a cleansing session to prepare for the later recordings. Her crystal bowls had a thicker sound than the more delicate crystal bowls I have recorded.
