by Riley Lee
Three breaths. Three minutes. Stop what you are doing. Inhale. Breathe out a sigh. Inhale. Breathe out a yawn; a 'fake' one is almost as good as a real one. Inhale. Breathe out another sigh. Hifumi Chō is a traditional shakuhachi meditation piece, an example of the 'choshi' or 'Shirabe' (searching) piece. These are short pieces designed to allow the performer, the listener, the instrument, the sound, and the environment all to find the 'right' relationship that is most conducive to meditation.
