Autumn Fields / Akita Sugagaki
by Riley Lee
Autumn Fields (Akita Sugagaki) is a centuries-old, orally-transmitted meditation. It was created, taught and performed in the context of Zen Buddhism in Japan. I received this piece from my first teacher Sakai Chikuho II, in the mid-1970s. To appreciate Autumn Fields fully as a listener, it helps to follow my breath, inhaling as much as possible, through your nose. This short meditation is perfect to pause during your busy day with a brief, rejuvenating moment of contemplation.
