Hello,
My name is Jacqueline and I'm a very proud grandma.
I write stories for my grandchildren and I'm very happy to share them with you too.
So if you're ready,
Make yourself comfortable,
Settle back because my next story is about to begin.
Kelty and the Deer Early one Sunday morning,
Just as the sun was rising,
Kelty was awakened by a strange sound coming from her garden.
It sounded like an animal crying.
Kelty lay in bed and listened.
There it was again.
What could be making that noise?
As she lay there thinking about what it could be,
She heard the sound again.
Kelty got out of bed,
Carefully peered through the gap in the curtains so as not to startle whatever was in the garden.
Lying on the lawn,
She could see a baby deer with its mummy standing over it.
At that moment,
The little deer cried and its mummy bent her head and gently nudged her baby as if to soothe it.
Kelty felt sad as she looked at the scene below her.
She wanted to help the baby deer,
But she really didn't know how she could.
She considered going back to bed until she heard the baby deer cry again.
I can't just leave him,
Kelty thought to herself.
I have to try and do something to help him.
Without wasting any time,
Kelty quickly put on her dressing gown and slippers and very quietly she went downstairs and into the kitchen.
Dougie was asleep in his bed and woke up when he heard Kelty.
He jumped out of his bed with excitement and ran up to her.
Hush boy,
She whispered as she bent down to stroke him.
Don't make a sound,
Otherwise you will wake mummy and daddy.
I am going outside to try and help a baby deer.
You can come with me,
But you must be quiet.
I will put you in my dressing gown pocket so you won't frighten him.
She picked her little dog up and carefully squeezed him into her dressing gown pocket.
Then,
As quietly as she could,
She opened the back door and went out into the garden.
Straight away,
The mummy deer caught sight of Kelty and nudged her baby until he stood up.
Walking away from him,
She headed into the forest and her baby followed behind crying as he went.
The baby deer was limping and looked in a lot of pain as he walked behind his mummy as quickly as he could.
Kelty decided to follow them into the forest and hopefully help in some way.
She felt so sad seeing this beautiful animal in pain.
As the deer walked further into the forest,
Kelty made sure she stayed far enough behind them so that the mummy deer did not get scared and then start to run.
Kelty had a feeling the baby deer would not be able to run and keep up with her.
When they got near to the big oak tree,
Kelty saw a man standing on the path just ahead of the mummy deer.
Without any hesitation,
The mummy deer walked right up to the man and allowed him to stroke her head.
Hello,
Girl,
The man said as he petted the deer.
What's wrong with Sunny?
The mummy deer moved to one side as her baby walked slowly up to the man.
Hey,
Sunny,
You look like you're in pain,
He said gently to the baby deer.
Come here.
I'll soon have you feeling better.
Sunny whimpered as he nestled up against the man.
Kelty had been watching all of this from behind a tree.
Deciding that now was a good time to make an appearance,
She stepped out and said,
Hello,
Sir,
My name is Kelty.
I followed the deer here because I wanted to help in some way.
Hello,
Kelty,
Said the man,
Not at all surprised to see her.
My name is Stan.
It's nice to meet you,
Young lady.
Come on over.
I could use an assistant.
Kelty walked over to where Stan and the deer were standing,
Suddenly wishing she had changed her pajamas and dressing gown for her jeans and fluffy pink jumper.
But Stan didn't seem to take any notice of how she was dressed.
Stan looked a friendly young man with his big blue eyes and smiley face.
He had curly brown hair with a dark green cloth cap on top.
He wore brown trousers held up by a pair of bright red braces,
Which were over the top of a blue checked shirt.
The sleeves of his shirt were rolled up just above his elbows,
Showing tattoos of different animals on his arms.
Kelty must have been staring at the tattoos because she heard Stan say,
I know there's a lot of animals on my arms,
But I love animals,
All kinds of animals,
From the tiniest of them to the biggest of them.
And if I can help any one of them,
I will.
I love animals too,
Replied Kelty,
Smiling.
I'm thinking of becoming a veterinary nurse when I grow up.
Well,
That's great,
Said Stan.
Roll up your sleeves and you can start today to see if you will like that job by helping me with Sunny.
Excitedly,
Kelty rolled up the sleeves to her dressing gown just as Duggee climbed out of her pocket.
She put him down on the ground and told him to behave.
Who's this?
Stan asked as Duggee went over to say hello.
He's my best friend Duggee,
Replied Kelty,
Feeling very proud of him.
He is very well behaved and a fun friend to have adventures with.
Stan tickled Duggee's tummy and then reached into a bag he had close by and pulled out a bone.
Here,
Give him this to chew on while we get to work,
He said,
Handing the bone to Kelty.
Duggee licked his lips as Kelty settled him by the big oak tree with a juicy bone.
As she turned to go back over to Stan,
She noticed a small shed behind him.
Curious,
She asked him what was in there.
That's my operating room,
Stan said,
Walking over to it and opening the door.
In here,
I have all the equipment I need to help any animal who may be sick or injured.
Come in and take a look.
Kelty went in and was surprised by the size of it.
It was a lot bigger inside than it had appeared from the outside.
There was a large operating table,
A medicine cabinet,
A long cupboard,
Some drawers,
A sink and lots of different kinds of equipment,
Most of which she had seen in the veterinary surgery she took Duggee to.
Come on,
Let's get ready to take a look at Sonny,
Stan said as he lifted the baby deer onto the operating table.
He was limping badly,
Kelty said as she washed her hands at the sink.
Yes,
Agreed Stan,
I think he may have something in his hoof.
Can you pet his head while I take a look?
Kelty gently stroked Sonny's head while Stan took a closer look at his hoof.
As he poked the bottom of the hoof with his finger,
Sonny cried out,
It's okay,
Sonny,
Kelty said softly,
Trying to soothe him.
We only want to help you feel better.
Could you get me a bowl of warm water and a cloth please,
Stan asked Kelty.
You'll find them in that cupboard behind you.
I need to clean the dirt from Sonny's hoof so I can see just what is causing his pain.
Kelty did as she was asked and within a minute she handed the bowl of water and cloth to Stan.
Then she returned to petting the baby deer's head.
Sonny cried as Stan cleaned his hoof as gently as he could.
I see what it is,
Said Stan eventually.
There is a pebble embedded in the soft part of his hoof.
I have to get that out.
Can you pass me the hoof pick please,
Kelty?
It is in the top drawer on your right.
Without hesitation Kelty fetched the hoof pick and passed it to Stan.
She held Sonny's head again and heard Stan say,
Now this may hurt him so hold him tight.
Loudly Sonny cried as the pebble flew suddenly out of his hoof and onto the ground.
Well done Sonny,
You should feel much better now,
Exclaimed Kelty as she stroked his head while Stan gently cleaned his hoof.
With Sonny's hoof looking clean and after taking a final look to make sure his work was done,
Stan said,
Let's see if you can walk better now,
Sonny.
He picked the baby deer up and carried him outside where he stood him carefully on the ground a little way from his mummy.
Sonny hesitated slightly before he placed his injured hoof on the ground.
Realising that it no longer hurt him,
He got his balance and walked over to where his mummy was standing and did not limp at all.
Hooray exclaimed Kelty feeling very happy for Sonny,
That is wonderful to see.
Well done Kelty,
Stan said as he patted her on the back.
You've done a great job as my assistant.
You will make an excellent veterinary nurse when you grow up.
Going back into his operating room,
Stan bent down and picked up the pebble from Sonny's hoof.
He washed it and gave it to Kelty.
Here is a reminder of your first day at work,
He said.
Kelty took the pebble from Stan and held it out in the palm of her hand so she could see it clearly.
Thank you she said smiling,
It's the shape of a heart,
How pretty.
She went over to Duggee who was still chewing on his bone by the big oak tree and showed him the pebble.
Look boy,
Another piece of treasure.
Duggee glanced up for a second before giving his bone one last lick.
Putting the pebble in her dressing gown pocket Kelty rolled down her sleeves and turned to say goodbye to Stan,
But he had disappeared along with his shed.
Everything was back to how it normally was,
Just trees and grass.
Even the deer were nowhere to be seen.
Kelty looked around one last time,
Then said,
Come on Duggee,
Let's go home.
As they walked through the forest Kelty thought about how she had assisted Stan with Sonny.
It really felt so wonderful to help an animal feel better.
Soon they reached the back door and Kelty opened it quietly.
Her mummy and daddy were not up yet so she put Duggee in his bed and told him to go back to sleep.
Then,
As silently as she could,
She crept up the stairs and into her bedroom.
She took the heart-shaped pebble out of her pocket and looked at it one last time before placing it with her other pieces of treasure.
Then she took off her dressing gown and slippers and was about to get back into bed when she heard a noise outside her window.
She opened her curtain slightly and looked out the window.
She saw Mummy Deer and her baby Sonny standing on the lawn looking up at her.
Kelty smiled at the deer and thought to herself,
Being a veterinary nurse is a very special job that I may decide to do when I grow up.
And she closed the curtains and climbed back into bed.
I hope you enjoyed listening to my story.
Before you go I'd like to ask you a question.
What type of job would you like to do when you grow up?
Thanks for listening and come back soon to hear another story from Grandma.

Off topic but I just read a book called the last Cherry Blossom. It was about a family living in Heroshima during WWII and when the bomb dropped she lost everything including her father, friend, and her mother after the impact from sickness. The book really touched me and I still am in a state of shock. Anyways tell your grandkids I said hi and keep writing good stories. Bye! 👌
