Heavenly Father,
We come before you tonight with hearts that are heavy,
With minds that are restless,
And with souls that long for peace.
We acknowledge your infinite wisdom,
Your endless compassion,
And your boundless love.
You who calm the stormy seas,
Who quiets the wind and waves,
We ask that you calm the storm within us now.
Lord,
We are often besieged by thoughts that steal our peace.
Thoughts of the day that has passed,
Of the day that is to come,
And of the unknown that lies ahead.
Our minds,
Like wild rivers,
Seem to race with currents of worry,
Of anxiety.
We struggle,
Lord,
To find that stillness,
That quiet place where sleep comes easy and deep.
Tonight,
We turn to you.
We turn to you,
Seeking your embrace,
Seeking your protection from the shadows that dance in the corners of our minds.
We ask you to gather our worries one by one and take them from us.
Lift the burden of anxiety from our shoulders,
Lord,
And replace it with the lightness of your peace.
Lord,
We know that anxiety is not from you.
You did not design us to live in fear.
You created us for love,
For joy.
In our human frailty,
We often find ourselves caught in the web of worry.
We fear what we cannot control.
We fret over what may never be.
We imagine the worst when you have promised us your best.
But in this moment,
As we lie here seeking rest,
We choose to trust in your goodness.
We choose to believe in your promises.
You have said that you will never leave us,
Nor forsake us.
You have said that your plans for us are for good,
To give us a future and a hope.
You have told us not to be anxious about anything.
And so we do that now,
Lord.
We lay our fears,
Our doubts,
Our anxieties at your feet.
We reflect on the nature of anxiety,
Lord.
It is a thief.
It steals our joy.
It robs us of our peace.
It distracts us from the beauty of the present moment.
It convinces us that we must carry the weight of the world on our own shoulders,
That we must solve every problem,
That we must anticipate every possible outcome.
But you,
Lord,
Invite us to cast our cares upon you,
Because you care for us.
You remind us that we are not alone,
That you are with us,
That you are for us.
Lord,
Help us to let go.
Help us to release our grip on the things that we cannot control.
Help us to trust that you are in control,
That you are working all things together for our good.
Help us to remember that you are the author of our story.
As we lie here,
We take deep breaths,
Feeling the air fill our lungs,
And as we exhale,
We release the tension we have been holding onto.
We let go of the tightness in our chest,
The clenching of our jaw,
The furrowing of our brow.
We allow ourselves to soften,
To sink deeply into the bed that cradles us.
We imagine your presence surrounding us,
Like a warm,
Soft blanket,
Comforting and protecting us.
We feel your peace,
Like a gentle stream,
Washing over us.
We allow ourselves to be still,
To be quiet,
To rest in you.
Lord,
We know that sleep is a gift from you,
A time for our bodies and minds to rest.
We ask for your gift of restful sleep tonight.
We ask that you would quiet our minds,
Soothe our hearts.
We pray for those thoughts that keep us awake,
The worries that creep in just as we close our eyes.
We ask that you would take those thoughts captive,
That you would replace them with your truth.
Remind us,
Lord,
That we are safe in your hands,
That we have nothing to fear,
That you are in control.
We rest in the knowledge that we are loved,
That we are safe,
That we are held by you.
And so we keep our minds on you now,
Lord.
We fix our thoughts on you,
On your goodness,
On your faithfulness.
We thank you,
Lord.
We thank you for the gift of sleep,
For the renewal it brings,
For the rest it provides.
Amen.
Amen.
Amen.
