The lake meditation.
Find a comfortable position,
Sitting or lying.
And allow your body to settle.
Gently close your eyes.
Or soften your gaze.
Take a slow,
Deep breath in.
And exhale fully.
Again.
Breathing in.
And out.
And let your breath return to its natural rhythm now.
Arriving.
And begin by noticing the simple sensations of breathing.
The air moving in.
And out.
No need to change anything.
Just observing.
Feel the weight of your body supported beneath you.
The ground holding you.
That your shoulders soften.
Your jaw on clench.
Your face relaxed.
Now,
Bringing to mind an image of a lake.
A quiet,
Still lake.
It may be familiar.
Or completely imagined.
Notice the surface of the water.
Perhaps it's calm and smooth,
Like glass.
Or maybe there are gentle ripples moving across it.
There is no right way for this lake to be.
And begin to see this lake as a reflection of your mind.
The surface of the water.
Like the surface of your awareness.
When the like is due.
It reflects clearly.
When the lake is stirred.
The surface becomes rippled.
Even choppy.
Just like the mind.
Notice what your lake is like right now.
Is it calm?
Busy?
And settled.
Whatever you find,
Let it be exactly as it is.
No need to fix it.
No need to change it.
Just observing.
If there are waves or ripples.
See if you can simply watch them.
Thoughts,
Emotions.
Sensations.
Moving across the surface like wind on water.
You don't need to chase them.
Or push them away.
Let them rise,
Move and pass.
Now gently shift your awareness below the surface of the water.
Beneath the waves.
Beneath the movement.
There is a depth.
A still,
Quiet space.
No matter how active the surface may be.
The deeper water remains calm.
Rest your attention here.
Resting in stillness.
And allow yourself to sink into this deeper part of the lake.
A place of steadiness.
Of quiet.
Even if thoughts continue above.
You can rest here.
Stew.
Grounded.
And move.
Still breathing.
Using the breath as an anchor.
Let your breath be like a gentle current in the lake.
Soft,
Steady,
Rhythmic.
Each inhale.
Each exhale.
Anchoring you in this deeper stillness.
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
Now when you're ready,
Beginning to notice the whole lake again.
The surface and the depth.
Both existing together.
Movement and stillness.
Coexisting.
You are not just the surface of your thoughts.
You are also the depth beneath them.
Seeing if it's possible to keep this or open awareness.
Of the movement at the surface.
And this stillness.
Underneath.
And then when you're ready.
Begin to bring awareness back to your body.
Your body in this room.
The feeling of your breath.
Your body resting.
The space around you.
Gently bringing some movement into your fingers and toes.
Take a deeper breath in.
And a long,
Slow exhale.
And opening your eyes when you're ready.
