When the train arrives, we are often wide awake. In the compartment, we look for a seat and open a book. Only when we've read a page do we notice that we no longer know what the page was about. Our eyes continue to perceive the words, but the head does not process them. We yawn a few times and fall asleep. Hardly anything makes us sleepier than the monotonous rattling of the tracks on a train journey. The steady, rhythmic sound lowers our heart rate, bringing our thoughts to rest.
