Understanding Resilience - Types And Traits
In this episode, we explore resilience as a skill you already possess, even if you may not realise it. Often misunderstood as just “bouncing back,” resilience is about adapting, learning, and thriving through life’s challenges. We’ll look at four main types: emotional resilience to handle feelings, mental resilience to stay grounded, social resilience to seek and give support, and physical resilience for recovery and endurance. Through a practical exercise, you’ll learn to recognise past resilience within yourself and find ways to face future obstacles with confidence and balance. Let’s uncover your inner resilience - starting right now.
Lição 2
How Resilient Are You Already?
How resilient do you think you already are? This time, we’re exploring how resilience helps us handle life’s challenges with greater balance, serving as an anchor in tough times and a tool for everyday ease. Resilience is more than surviving adversity; it gives us the skills to manage stress intentionally. Through this session, you’ll reflect on a recent challenge, identify the resilient actions you took, and recognise the strengths you drew upon, whether it was adapting your approach, seeking support, or staying committed. By understanding your unique resilience habits, you’ll gain insight into how resilience is already showing up in your life and how to build on that.
Lição 3
Time Travelling Resilience
Resilience is complex to define and predict due to its unique, highly variable nature across individuals, influenced by factors like environment, personality, and culture. Once considered rare, research now shows that two-thirds of people exhibit resilience after trauma, often without realising it. In this lesson, we explore resilience as a "time traveler": in the past, resilience helped us adapt and gain new skills from hard experiences, like a breakup that pushed you to find financial independence. In the present, resilience drives us to face difficult situations tactically, like handling a toxic boss. Looking to the future, resilience sharpens our awareness of red flags, helping us avoid past mistakes and make wiser choices.
Lição 4
Emotional Intelligence And Learning By Example
Today, we’re exploring emotional intelligence and how observing others’ coping strategies can help us strengthen our own resilience. This approach, that I call, "poaching resilience," involves learning from others’ successful behaviours without comparison or judgment, instead selectively adopting what resonates with us. By watching someone else adapt well, like choosing rest after illness despite societal pressure to stay productive, we give ourselves permission to try that approach. Resilience is often about using social resources, whether seeking advice or simply connecting with friends, which can reinforce our own strategies. Emotional intelligence plays a key role here, helping us recognise and manage our emotions and see things from others' perspectives. To close, we practiced a short visualisation to tap into our resilience by imagining ourselves facing a current challenge calmly and confidently, reminding us of our unique strengths and tools for overcoming adversity.
Lição 5
Small Acts, Big Resilience
In this episode, we explore the small, often unnoticed moments of resilience that exist in everyday life. While resilience is often associated with big, dramatic events, it’s actually built from the quiet, subtle acts of persistence we demonstrate daily. Whether it’s savoring a cup of coffee, laughing with a friend, or simply choosing to rest when needed, these small moments contribute to our overall strength. Resilient people possess a mindset that recognises their ability to shape outcomes, even through the smallest actions. Recognising and celebrating these acts can help us build confidence in our ability to navigate challenges, reinforcing the idea that resilience is already within us.
Lição 6
Bad Resilience?
In today’s episode, we explore how resilience can show up in unexpected ways, sometimes as arrogance or hyper-independence, which might seem helpful in the short term but are ultimately brittle and unsustainable. While these strategies may give us a temporary sense of control, they don’t nurture deeper, long-term resilience. True resilience is anchored in compassion, emotional flexibility, and strong values. Compassion helps us navigate challenges with empathy, while emotional flexibility allows us to shift our emotional responses to better handle life’s ups and downs. Practical ways to build resilience include setting small, stretch goals, strengthening social connections, and practicing mindfulness. By being self-aware and adaptable, we can grow our resilience and build a stronger foundation for the future.
Lição 7
Building Resilience Through Nature Connection
In this final episode, we explore nature as a powerful source of resilience, highlighting its ability to enhance physical, mental, and emotional strength. Nature's calming effects, such as reducing stress, improving mood and strengthening the immune system, remind us of the natural cycles of life. By spending time outdoors, whether through a walk in the park or connecting with plants, we tap into resilience in a way that is both grounding and restorative. The episode includes a visualisation exercise to help you connect with the resilience found in nature and integrate its calming, steadying energy into your life. Nature is always there, offering us reminders of our own strength and adaptability.
