Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an increasingly popular form of therapy, originally developed for trauma, and is now being used for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, complicated grief, and other conditions. Join me in building a strong foundation for EMDR therapy, using bilateral stimulation, resourcing, grounding, nervous system regulation, and self-soothing tools. Please note, while I am a licensed psychotherapist trained in EMDR, these practices are a form of self-help and do not constitute therapy or the complete EMDR protocol. Rather, this course provides brief psychoeducation on the arc of the eight-phase EMDR protocol. You will learn foundational practices, typically taught in Phase 2 (preparation) of EMDR, to complement existing or future EMDR treatment. My aim is for you to integrate at least two "change state" EMDR practices in your daily life.

Lição 1
Principles Of Trauma Healing
In this session we will learn the principles of trauma recovery and the four phase model of trauma recovery from Dr. Judith Herman. We will learn what makes EMDR unique, including the framework of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) Model and the use of bilateral stimulation. We end by sending appreciation to the parts of you that have brought you to this course.

Introduction To Bilateral Stimulation
In this session we will learn how bilateral stimulation (BLS) is hypothesized to function and how it is used in different phases throughout EMDR. We will practice different forms of bilateral stimulation, used specifically for preparation and resourcing, including tapping on your body, the Butterfly Hug, and eye movements. We will end with working with the orienting response and tracking subtle shifts in the nervous system.

Four Elements Exercise
In this session we will learn the Four Elements Exercise, originally developed by Elan Shapiro. This exercise may be used during an EMDR session with a therapist and can also be used outside of sessions. I will guide you through working with the different elements as a way to support with stress. If your mouth feels dry, you can have water or hard candy handy. We will end by anchoring the elements together with any nervous system shifts.

Container Exercise
In this session we will learn the Container Exercise, one of the most classic EMDR preparation activities. We will practice symbolic containment and deepen the sense of having choice and options when it comes to distressing material. We will end the practice by re-orienting to your space and pausing to integrate what you learned.
Lição 5
Butterfly Hug
In this session we will practice the Butterfly Hug together, starting with gentle bilateral stimulation and adding in a safe and peaceful place resource. We will continue practice tracking the nervous system and allowing for pendulation of the nervous system. We will bring awareness to places in the body that feel relatively more neutral or pleasant. Like a butterfly, we will gently float between places of relative ease and relative discomfort in the body. This tool can be used when you want to self-soothe, self-regulate, or support yourself.

Spiral Technique
In this session we will practice the Spiral Technique together, first scanning your body for any disturbance and rating the level of distress. We will work in creative ways with distress felt in the body. We will play with working with minor distress in real time, allowing for movement, shifts, and spirals. Lightstream Technique
In this session we will learn the Light Stream Technique. This technique can help with upsetting body sensations and emotions. In this practice session, we will invite a stream of light to flow around the unpleasant sensations and emotions in your body. Please note, this recording uses bilateral music. Lição 8
Nurturing And Protective Figures
In this session we will practice a way to work with real or imaginal resources, an essential component of EMDR. I will ask you to bring to mind someone who has been nurturing (or protective, competent, etc). It could be a real person, an animal, a deity, a fictional character, a beloved pet, or any other being or figure who has significance. People in real life can be complicated, so hold the intention that only the most helpful aspects of that person are invited. Sometimes this exercise can bring up grief, whether for what you lost or never had. If you are noticing grief, take a moment to self-soothe, acknowledge the hurt, and shift into compassion. Calm Safe Place
In this session we will learn Calm Space Place, a foundational step in EMDR preparation. If you don’t connect to the idea of a calm or safe place, see if there is another description that works for you, such as a peaceful place or a protected place. Lição 10
Integration
In this session we will integrate what we learned, touching back into the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and uses of bilateral stimulation. We learned seven foundational EMDR preparation (Phase 2) practices - Four Elements, Container Exercise, Butterfly Hug, Spiral Technique, Lightstream Technique, Nurturing and Protective Figures, and Calm Safe Place. We will trace the arc of EMDR protocol and how preparation fits in. We will close with one last shared opportunity to stack bilateral stimulation, a resource, and anchor statement.
