Yemoja / Yemaja / Iemanja is a Yoruba goddess (orisha) of water and oceans. She is the protector of women, especially pregnant women. She is the mother of all Orishas. She is the Great Mother. She is the queen of the seas. The legend says that when her water broke it caused a great flood, creating rivers and streams, and the first mortal humans were created from her womb. She is associated with the moon, water, and feminine mysteries. Her symbol is the seashell and her color is light blue. Other symbols include the fish. She is also called Mami Wata. She is invoked in purification rituals and is said to be able to cure infertility in women. White roses and white garments are used to celebrate her in Brazil.
