Light Of The Infinite - Kabbalistic Visualization
by Akiva Elhart
This visualization draws upon Jewish meditation techniques from medieval Kabbalah (meaning "receive") - the "received" tradition of mystical teachings passed down orally from master to disciple over many generations, and preserved also in written form in various esoteric Jewish texts. One purpose of this visualization is to allow us to perceive the subtle energy (symbolized by light) that is just beyond our ordinary consciousness, and to connect the ohr penimi - our inner light - with the ohr makif - the encompassing or surrounding light of the Divine. By so doing, we become aware of a Source of powerful energy that we can choose to tap into at any time. Another aspect of this particular practice is to enliven the sefirot ("emanations" sefirah, singular) - energy centers that can be mapped onto the subtle body or onto the cosmos, often compared to the chakras. By visualizing light filling each sefirah, we attain a state of greater balance and harmony.
