SOS was proposed and adopted as it is an easy sequence to type in Morse code, Then the preferred method of communication for ships at sea. It replaced the existing distress code, Which was CQD. The CQ indicated an alert and the D indicated danger. Had the switched to SOS, It seems likely that we would have come up with some fanciful origin story for the initial signal. Come quick, Dammit! Cabal. Definition. The contrived schemes of a group of persons secretly united in a plot as to overturn a government. A popular story about Cabal is that the word comes from the initials of five dastardly plotters, Clifford, Arlington, Buckingham, Ashley, And Lauderdale, High-ranking officials in the government of King Charles II. This tale, Which appears to have sprung from the pen of Charles Dickens, Sounds plausible enough that it is still encountered today. However, Cabal is not an acronym. It comes from the late Hebrew kabbalah, Meaning received lore, And has been in use in English since the 16th century, Well before Charles II came to the throne. The initial meaning of the word was concerned with Jewish interpretation of the Old Testament, And the sense relating to plotters emerged in the middle of the 17th century. Gossip. Definition. Rumor or report of an intimate nature. Many of the etymological myths that we come across are based on an imaginary significance of initials. The imaginative origin of gossip differs from this model, Insofar as it is thought to be part of a compounded phrase rather than initials. The proposed origin for gossip is that once upon a time, Politicians who were interested in learning what their constituents were thinking about would send their surrogates out to taverns to eavesdrop. With the directive, Go sip some ale. There are some problems with this explanation. The first problem is that we have no actual evidence of the phrase being used in writing with this apparent meaning. Virtually all mentions of it come up as theories for the origin of gossip. Additionally, These theories only begin to be seen in the late 20th century. We do have evidence of gossip being used from before the 12th century, Well before there would have been politicians sending their lackeys to the local tavern. Gossip comes from the Old English word godsib, Which was a person, Such as a godparent, Who was a sponsor at baptism. Golf. Definition. A game in which a player using special clubs attempts to sink a ball with as few strokes as possible into each of the nine or eighteen successive holes on a course. We are not entirely certain about the origins of the word golf. We do know that it comes from the Scots variety of Middle English, But past that things get a little hazy. What we are certain about is that it is not an acronym for the phrase Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden. How do we know this? The game of golf is thought to be quite a bit older than its name, But there is evidence of the word in use from almost 600 years ago. There is no evidence of Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden until the late 1980s. The chance of a pithy phrase such as this serving as the basis for a common word, But never having been mentioned for over 500 years, Is slim enough to not merit consideration. Posh. Definition. Elegant. Fashionable. The notion that posh is an acronym for Port Out, Starboard Home is one of the more enduring myths of English etymology. Resistant to common sense, Probability, And copious amounts of research, This phrase is not the origin of posh. Port Out, Starboard Home is thought to refer to the desirability of certain cabin accommodations on ships traveling between Britain and India. On the way out the port side of the ship would be preferred, As it has received less sun, As was the case with the starboard side on the way back. Despite what you may have heard, Tickets, Or at least all the surviving ones from that time, Were not stamped with the words posh. We do have a good deal of evidence of the word's use from the early 20th century, And one thing about it that is striking is that most of it comes from the British military. These uses were generally by lower ranking troops, Not the sort who would be picking which cabin they wanted for a liner voyage to India. The actual origin of the word is unknown. Doozy. Definition. An extraordinary one of its kind. The Duesenberg Company produced very fine cars in the early 20th century. The word doozy appears in writing somewhere near the beginning of the 20th century. Therefore, Doozy must be shortening of Duesenberg, Mustn't it? Isn't this how etymology works? No, It mustn't. And no, It isn't. The obvious problem with saying that doozy comes from Duesenberg is that the former is older than the latter. The car company did not start producing vehicles until 1920, And the word had been in use for more than 20 years by that time. The argument that the name of the car may not have come first but possibly helped doozy become popular is also problematic, As we have no evidence linking the two terms in the early 20th century. Doozy most likely came about as an alteration of daisy, Which in the 19th century slang was something or someone considered the best. Handicap. Definition. A race or contest in which an artificial advantage is given or a disadvantage imposed on a contestant to equalize chances of winning. Yes, Handicap does come from hand in cap, But no, It does not refer to maimed veterans of war who were granted the right to beg on the streets of London with cap in hand. Handicap, Which has been in use since the middle of the 17th century, Comes from the name of the game, Which involved two players, One umpire, A hat, And some hands. The word progressed from one sport to another, And by the middle of the 18th century it began to be used in horse racing in reference to the additional weight borne by a horse thought to otherwise have an advantage. From horse racing the word spread to other sports, Such as golf, And from there began to be used to refer to any encumbrance. It was not until the end of the 19th century that handicap was used to refer specifically to a physical disability. It should be noted that this use of handicap is offensive to many. Feel your calves as they sink more deeply into the mat beneath you. Let the muscles on top of your shins relax. Feel them just let go. And now feel that soft golden light move into your knees. Let the warmth fill your knees. Let your kneecaps relax. Feel the backs of your knees relax. Feel the muscles around your knees relax. Just let them go. Feel the warmth begin to move up into your thighs. Let the big muscles in your thighs relax. Let the warmth drip from the tops of your thighs and ooze into the backs of your thighs. Feel the backs of your thighs just sinking into the mat beneath you. Just let them go. Now let the warm golden light move into your hip joints. Let your hips relax. Feel a ball of golden light filling your abdominal area. Feel the warmth from that ball of light. Take a deep breath into that ball of golden light. And feel it expand. You need time to disconnect, To break away from that monotonous, Grinding, Ever-present, Thump, Thump, Thump, Thump of work that goes on behind your eyes. You can feel it throughout the day. When you start the day, You put on your work coat, Your heavy, Sodden, Burlap, Fur work coat of stress and anxiety and everything that you didn't do, That you have to do, That you want to do, That you didn't know you needed to do. It's all put on every single day that you come in, But this is lunchtime. Lunchtime is the time that you're going to take a break. You're going to take a break for yourself. You're going to disconnect from work and reconnect with yourself. You need to find a quiet spot. It doesn't matter if it's a break area inside the building because they won't let you leave, Or you can actually walk outside. As you brought your own lunch, You can sit in the nice, Sunny area, Quiet, Disconnected, Maybe listen to some music, Maybe listen to someone talking to you, Just like this. But in any case, You need to disconnect during lunch to give yourself some time to reconnect with yourself. Everything that you just left behind in that building, Everything that you essentially walked out on for the lunch break is your time, Your time to think about yourself, Your family, What you want to do. Maybe it is so burdensome that you have to have some work thoughts intrude on that serenity. But even with that, Take that into stride. Hold on to it and control it and say, This is my time so I can think about you. I can think about what I need to do or how that person interacted with me or why I'm not feeling my 110% best today. But let it all go. It doesn't matter right now. What matters is you. What matters is letting yourself give to yourself, Be of yourself and be with yourself. You need to disconnect from the noise, From the sounds, From the vibrations. You can see the auras, The presence, The way that people interact with you and you interact with them because they're expecting something from you. You're expecting something from them. You don't know what to say. They make a comment and you have to interact or react or respond in a certain way that you feel is appropriate or professional. This is the decompression. This is the unprofessional time. This is the personal time. You can sit down. You can relax. You can spread your lunch out in front of you. Take your time to chew. Take your time to look at what you have in front of you. What quality you have. It doesn't matter if it's an apple, Some potato chips, Last night's mac and cheese, A bottle of water, The cold coffee from 7 a. M. This is your sustenance. This is what you need to relax yourself, To take time to give back to your body, To make sure you have the energy to get back in there after your break time but you need to think about yourself. You need to think about your surroundings. Look up at the sun. Take a look at those flowers. Breathe. Just breathe and relax. There's time to go back. It's just not right now. The Atlantic coast of Florida. You've just arrived. You've parked. You've found public parking, Hard to find in Florida sometimes, Depending on the day, Depending on the time of year but you found that spot. Actually, It was rock star parking. It was close to the walkway. It was as close to the beach as you can get. Your day is starting off to be a great one. You get out of your car. You park. You've got a towel with you, Maybe a book. You start walking towards the beach and your flip-flops flopping away, Walking up, Up onto the steps, Down the wooden ramp, Holding the rail just in case, A little bit slippery with the water and the sand and you look out and you see a vast array of sunshine, Clouds, Birds, Sand, And just a few people. It's going to be a great day. You start walking out there. You've got to take your flip-flops off. Your feet just aren't making the cut when they're walking on that sand. Put your flip-flops in your hand. Sink a little bit in the sand. It's a little bit wet. It's a little bit cold. But you can feel the sun behind you. It's going to be warming up that sand. You start walking towards the water because you want to be close to the water. You want to be next to life, Next to activity, Next to something that's changing, Flowing. You want to be a part of that, But you still want to be by yourself. You want to relax. You want to enjoy yourself. You walk towards the water. Clop, Clop, Clop. Feet getting stuck in the sand a little bit. Sand between the toes itching. But you find a nice flat spot. It's about six feet from the water. You can see the wave rush in, Chasing after the birds who are trying to find their breakfast in the sand. Six feet from the water. Just right. Water is just out of your reach. But it's close enough to hear it lapping and rolling in as each successive wave comes in. You put your towel down. Put your shoes right beside it. You sit down on your towel with your legs extended in front of you. You got your hands behind you. You're arched. You're up towards the sun. Your face is towards the sun. You can feel the heat on your face. But the cool, Salty breeze. You didn't feel the salt, But you smelled it. As it kind of wafted around you, A little breeze came through. The birds are singing. A few people in the distance have some dogs barking. But it's serene. You feel at ease. You feel at peace. You shove your toes into the sand. You're burying your toes. You want to feel like you did as a kid. You want to squish that sand between your toes. You close your eyes now. You can hear the waves lapping at your feet, Just outside of reach. The sun is getting a little bit hotter now on your neck, On your cheeks, On your forehead. You've almost got some salt. It's around your nose, Your nostrils. You can smell it. You can almost taste it now. Salt in the air, Wafting up from those waves as they come in, Crashing in. You almost feel like you want the wave to come in and engulf you and take you and probably pull you out to sea. But it would be calming. It would be serene. It would be magical. It would be spiritual. Fulfilling to have the wave come in, Wash over your buried feet, Get your towel wet, Get your little butt wet, Get up to your hands that are buried in the sand behind you and just envelop you, Wrap around you like a colder, Saltier, Big hug of a blanket and then take you back out to sea with it. It's coming in. You know it's coming in. That next wave is coming in. It's going to get you and take you out to sea and you're okay. A difficult tongue twister about cheese and trees and fleas. I don't know who thought this up. Through three cheese trees three free fleas flew. While these fleas flew, Freezing breeze blew. Freezy breeze made these three trees freeze. SOS was proposed and adopted as it is an easy sequence to type in Morse code then the preferred method of communication for ships at sea. It replaced the existing distress code which was CQD. The CQ indicated an alert and the D indicated danger. Had the code not switched to SOS it seems likely that we would have come up with some fanciful origin story for the initial signal Come quick dammit! Cabal Definition The contrived schemes of a group of persons secretly united in a plot as to overturn a government. A popular story about cabal is that the word comes from the initials of five dastardly plotters Clifford Arlington Buckingham Ashley and Lauderdale high-ranking officials in the government of King Charles II. This tale which appears to have sprung from the pen of Charles Dickens sounds plausible enough that it is still encountered today. However cabal is not an acronym it comes from the late Hebrew kabbalah meaning received lore and has been in use in English since the 16th century well before Charles II came to the throne. The initial meaning of the word was concerned with Jewish interpretation of the Old Testament and the sense relating to plotters emerged in the middle of the 17th century. Gossip Definition Rumor or report of an intimate nature Many of the etymological myths that we come across are based on an imaginary significance of initials. The imaginative origin of gossip differs from this model insofar as it is thought to be part of a compounded phrase rather than initials. The proposed origin for gossip is that once upon a time politicians who were interested in learning what their constituents were thinking about would send their surrogates out to taverns to eavesdrop with the directive go sip some ale. The game of golf is thought to be quite a bit older than its name but there is evidence of the word in use from almost 600 years ago. There is no evidence of gentlemen only, Ladies forbidden until the late 1980s. The chance of a pithy phrase such as this serving as the basis for a common word but never having been mentioned for over 500 years is slim enough to not merit consideration. Posh Definition Elegant Fashionable The notion that posh is an acronym for port out starboard home is one of the more enduring myths of English etymology resistant to common sense probability and copious amounts of research. This phrase is not the origin of posh. Port out starboard home is thought to refer to the desirability of certain cabin accommodations on ships traveling between Britain and India. On the way out the port side of the ship would be preferred as it has received less sun as was the case with the starboard side on the way back. Despite what you may have heard tickets or at least all the surviving ones from that time were not stamped with the words posh. We do have a good deal of evidence of the word's use from the early 20th century and one thing about it that is striking is that most of it comes from the British military. These uses were generally by lower ranking troops not the sort who would be picking which cabin they wanted for a liner voyage to India. The actual origin of the word is unknown. Doozy Definition An extraordinary one of its kind The Duesenberg Company produced very fine cars in the early 20th century. The word doozy appears in writing somewhere near the beginning of the 20th century. Therefore doozy must be shortening of Duesenberg, Mustn't it? Isn't this how etymology works? No, It mustn't. And no, It isn't. The obvious problem with saying that doozy comes from Duesenberg is that the former is older than the latter. The car company did not start producing vehicles until 1920 and the word had been in use for more than 20 years by that time. The argument that the name of the car may not have come first but possibly helped doozy become popular is also problematic as we have no evidence linking the two terms in the early 20th century. Doozy most likely came about as an alteration of daisy which in the 19th century slang was something or someone considered the best. Handicap Definition A race or contest in which an artificial advantage is given or a disadvantage imposed on a contestant to equalize chances of winning. Yes, Handicap does come from hand in cap but no, It does not refer to maimed veterans of war who were granted the right to beg on the streets of London with cap in hand. Handicap which has been in use since the middle of the 17th century comes from the name of the game which involved two players one umpire a hat and some hands. The word progressed from one sport to another and by the middle of the 18th century it began to be used in horse racing in reference to the additional weight borne by a horse fought to otherwise have an advantage. From horse racing the word spread to other sports such as golf and from there began to be used to refer to any encumbrance. It was not until the end of the 19th century that handicap was used to refer specifically to a physical disability.
