There is a phrase in Hindi which says,
It means to take an axe and bring it down on your own foot.
You know that feeling,
Even if you don't know this phrase.
The course you paid for but did not open?
The email you drafted but didn't send?
The morning you had free and chose to spend it scrolling on Insta?
Nobody stopped you.
There was no argument.
You did not sit down and decide against it.
He just quietly chose not to.
Here's what I want you to notice about that.
There was no voice.
We talk about the inner critic as though it were a commentator.
Something that says,
You are not good enough.
Who do you think you are?
Someone else is better at this.
And sometimes,
It does.
Sometimes,
You can hear it clearly.
But the critic that actually costs you something.
Has stopped talking.
It learned at some point that talking gets argued with.
You have read the books.
You know how to answer you're not good enough.
You can counter that in your sleep.
So,
It stopped announcing itself.
And it started arranging things instead.
It does not tell you that you will fail.
It makes you tired at exactly 6pm.
It does not say you are not ready.
It reminds you that something else is urgent.
That is the version that sounds like you.
Not cruel,
Not loud,
But reasonable.
Every single decision taken on its own,
Defensible.
And this is the part I want to be precise about.
Because it is the whole mechanism.
Your behavior is not random.
It is the visible end of something that you believe.
The things you do every day,
Repeated,
Become a pattern.
And that pattern.
Is not an accident.
It is the shape of a belief you are holding about who you are capable of being.
Which means the critic is not hiding.
It is right there in the open.
It is just not in your thoughts.
It is in your calendar.
Here is the shift and it runs against most of what you have been told.
Stop trying to catch the thought.
You have probably tried it.
You have tried to notice the negative self-talk.
Challenge it and even replace it.
But it does not work particularly well.
And now,
You may have a second problem.
Witches,
That you are bad at the thing that was supposed to fix you.
It does not work because you are searching in the wrong place.
You are listening for a sentence that is not being spoken.
Go to the behavior instead.
Behavior cannot hide.
It is the honest record.
You can talk yourself into any belief about who you are and what you want.
But you cannot talk yourself out of what you actually did last Tuesday.
And there is a test in that.
A simple one.
If what you say you want and what you actually do are not lining up.
That gap is not discipline failure.
That gap.
Is information.
Something underneath is not in agreement with the plan.
One thing I want to be careful about because I do not want you to walk away from this resenting yourself.
The doubt underneath is not there.
A character flaw.
It is not a defect.
A certain amount of it is doing a job.
Hesitating before you trust a stranger is not self-sabotage.
It is common sense.
Fear evolved to keep a body alive.
And it is not always wrong.
The question was never how to have less fear.
The question is what you're treating it as.
Because you can hold the same feeling as a warning.
Or you can hold it as a signal that something matters.
Those two produce completely different results.
And nobody can make that call for you.
It is genuinely a choice and it is yours.
So here is the one thing.
It takes about 5 minutes.
Read your week backwards.
Not forwards.
Not as a plan.
Instead,
Look at the week that just happened.
And find one thing you meant to do but did not.
Just one.
The specific one.
Not something vague as I wasn't productive.
But the actual thing that you're meant to do.
But did not end up doing.
Then ask the only question that matters.
What would I have to believe about myself for that to have made sense?
Sit with this.
Because the first answer will be your logistics answer.
Maybe you'd say,
You were tired,
You were busy,
There wasn't enough time.
Go Pasta!
There is usually a second answer underneath and it is a sentence about you.
It probably wouldn't have been any good anyway.
Or someone would have noticed I don't really know what I am doing.
Or it is a bit late for me to be starting this.
That sentence.
Is your critic.
That is what it actually sounds like.
And noticed that it never said any of it out loud.
It just moved your particular day of the week.
You do not have to fix the sentence.
You do not need to argue with it.
You're only making it say itself once in words where you can see it.
Because a belief that stays in your behavior runs your life.
A belief you have written down is just a sentence and sentences can be looked at.
You're not lazy and you're not undisciplined.
You have been standing quietly in your own way and it has been so well reasoned with that you never caught it.
So this week.
One thing you did not do.
Question that and the sentence underneath it.
You do not have to do anything about that sentence just yet.
Just find out what it is saying to you.
And once you figure that out,
You will know what behaviour you need to change.
