There is something you have been meaning to start.
Not awake something.
You know exactly what it is.
You have thought about it in the shower.
You have half-drafted it somewhere.
You have mentioned it to maybe two people casually in a tone that lets you take it back if you need to.
And you have not started.
If someone asked you why.
Maybe you say time.
And time is real.
Your calendar is not fiction.
But you have found time for things you cared much less than this.
So let us talk about the real reason.
Here is something strange about capable people.
And we are all capable.
You fail at work constantly.
A pitch does not land.
A launch slips.
A project you led gets quietly shelved in a reorg.
And you survive it.
You are irritated for a day.
You tell someone about it over lunch,
And then you move on.
So why does this small personal thing,
The one nobody is even watching,
Feel so much more dangerous than the thing that had a professional tag attached to it?
Because at work,
Failure has some place else to go.
The market shifted.
The timeline was never realistic.
Legal took three weeks.
There is always a system to absorb it.
And the system is shared.
Nobody concludes anything permanent about you.
And you know that.
So you can take the risk.
Your own thing,
However,
Has no system,
No committee,
No budget line.
No colleague standing next to you when it goes badly.
If it does not work.
There is exactly one place for the blame to land.
On you.
And this is the actual fear.
Not failing,
But being judged for it.
And there is something else happening,
Which is harder to see,
Because it does not feel like fear at all.
It feels like common sense.
Right now,
While you have not started,
You're holding something quite valuable.
You're holding the possibility that you could be good at this.
Untested,
That possibility is perfect.
It does not lose.
It does not get only 11 people seeing that thing.
On a long Tuesday in a meeting,
You can reach for it and say,
I could do this thing.
I just have not gotten to it yet.
And it makes the day easier to sit through.
The moment you begin,
However,
That stops being a possibility.
And it becomes a result.
A real one.
Something with edges that can come back smaller than the version in your head.
So part of you protects it.
Not out of laziness because you're not lazy.
You already do hard things every single day.
You protect it out of care.
It is the one thing you own that has never let you down.
Which means every month that you do not start it is not a month you wasted.
It is a month you spent paying to keep a hypothesis intact.
And notice the cruel part of this.
The more competent you are,
The more expensive this test.
Because starting means being a beginner again in public.
After years of being the person who knows what they are doing,
This is not a small ask.
It is reasonable that you have been avoiding it.
It is just not free.
So here's the reframe.
And it is not failure is your friend,
Because you have heard that earlier.
And it has done nothing.
And it will not do anything today either.
Here's my recommendation.
Failure is not an event.
It is an event plus a sentence.
The event is almost always small and boring.
For example,
You publish something and only 11 people see it.
You offer a service and only one person buys it.
You send 12 messages and get only 2 replies.
None of them mean anything on their own.
They are just events.
There are no adjectives attached to the event.
The sentence that comes up after the event is what does the damage.
And the sentence arrives about four seconds after the event,
In your own voice.
And it never announces itself as an opinion.
It arrives sounding so reasonable,
Almost like a discovery.
And it creeps up.
And sounds something like,
I'm not cut out for this.
People can tell that I do not know what I am doing or I should have started sooner or some version of this.
Notice that none of these describes what actually happened.
They are conclusions about who you are.
And your judgment about what has happened.
And here is the part that matters most.
The sentence is not written at the moment of failure.
It was written a long time ago.
At the moment of failure,
You're not thinking,
You're retrieving.
Which is oddly good news,
Because anything written in advance can be rewritten.
So here is the one thing.
Before you start the thing that you have been postponing,
It's going to take you 90 seconds to do this.
You're going to write down two sentences.
Line 1,
The sentence your head will hand you if this goes badly.
Write it in the exact words it will use.
Do not tidy it up.
You know how it talks to you,
May sound like.
This proves that I am not good enough.
Or I knew this would happen.
Get it out of your head.
And onto the people.
Where you can see how enormous a claim it is making from so little evidence.
Line two that you're going to write down is.
.
.
What actually has happened?
Flat.
No adjectives,
No verdict,
Just the event.
Something like,
I published this piece of content and 11 people saw it.
I offered a service and one person bought it.
This is line 2.
And on the day if things do go wrong.
This is all that will be true.
Line 2 is not a pep talk.
Do not write it in a way to pump yourself up.
That is just a nicer verdict.
And your head will not believe it.
And it will reach for line 1 instead.
Line 2 has to be so plain it is undeniable.
Boring even.
Then keep both lines somewhere you will find them.
Not to read daily.
But to read it on the day that things don't go the way you hoped.
Because on that day,
You will not be able to generate line 2.
The version of you sitting here now can.
That is the entire reason for doing this in advance.
You're not trying to stop being afraid.
You are pre-writing the flat version,
So the loud version does not get to speak unopposed.
I want to leave you with a reframe.
You are not avoiding the work.
You are protecting a good opinion of yourself that has never really been tested.
And that is a reasonable thing to want to protect.
It is simply very expensive.
And the price is that nothing ever begins.
The way through is not more courage.
Courage is for real danger.
This is not dangerous.
It is a verdict.
You wrote yourself and have been quietly agreeing with.
Two lines and then start something small enough that failing at it would be almost boring.
And when some of it does not go well,
And some of it will not,
See if you can stay.
Online too.
Just the event.
Not the adjective.
Not your judgment of the event.
