Ariadne is a figure in Greek mythology and the daughter of King Minos of Crete. Her name is derived from the Greek words ari (ἀρι-), meaning "most", and adnós (ἀδνός), meaning "holy", and translates to "most holy". Ariadne is best known for her role in helping Theseus defeat the Minotaur, her half-brother, and escape the Labyrinth. She gave Theseus a thread to help him find his way out of the maze. Ariadne was also the wife of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and festivity.
