Settle in to wherever you are,
Let your body find it's own comfortable weight,
No adjustments necessary,
Just arrive where you already are.
Bring to mind that particular person you've been thinking of,
With those qualities and behaviours,
The one whose behaviour gets under your skin,
Whose specific quality,
Whatever it is,
Produces a reaction in you that has just a little too much heat in it.
Let them come into focus,
Not with hostility,
Just clearly,
Now,
And this is the only thing this meditation asks of you,
Set them gently to one side,
Because what we're looking at today is not them.
Notice the quality itself,
Stripped of the person,
Just the behaviour,
The trait,
The thing that hooks you,
Arrogance perhaps,
Or neediness,
Dishonesty,
Loudness,
Fragility,
Self-promotion,
Weakness,
Whatever it is,
Let it sit in the room with you for just a moment.
Now ask yourself,
Quietly and without rushing,
To an answer,
Where do I know this from the inside,
Not whether you behave exactly this way,
But whether this quality,
In some form,
In some context,
At some point,
Has lived in you too.
Let the question breathe.
There is a version of every quality you find intolerable that belongs to you,
Sometimes it is the quality itself unacknowledged,
Sometimes it is the fear of that quality,
That part of you that suppressed it so completely that seeing it freely expressed in someone else feels like an accusation.
Either way,
It is yours,
And reclaiming what is yours,
Even the difficult parts,
Is not defeat,
It is the opposite of defeat.
Now bring to mind someone you admire,
Someone whose qualities you find almost magnetic,
Confidence,
Ease,
Creativity,
Warmth,
Authority,
Something you observe in them and feel,
Quietly,
As a kind of longing.
That longing is also a map,
What you see in them that moves you,
That is not foreign to you,
It is simply waiting to be claimed.
Let both people go now,
Gently,
With something close to gratitude,
Because whether they know it or not,
They have been showing you something true about yourself.
Bring your awareness back to the room,
Your breath,
The specific quality of where you are right now,
And carry this with you.
Every strong reaction is an arrow,
Today you learn to look at where it is pointing.
