Who am I without the shoulds,
A guided reflection?
Find a quiet place where you can settle in.
Take a deep breath in and a slow,
Steady breath out.
Let your body relax.
Let your mind settle.
There is no pressure here,
No expectations,
Just space to explore.
As you breathe,
Bring your attention to the word should.
How often do you hear it in your own mind?
I should be further along.
I should be more grateful.
I should be different than I am.
Notice how it feels in your body when you say,
I should.
Do you feel tension,
A sense of pressure,
A shrinking away from yourself?
For a moment,
Just sit with that feeling.
No need to push it away.
Just observe it.
Now,
Begin to reflect.
What are the shoulds that have shaped me?
Who taught me these expectations?
Do they belong to me or were they given to me?
Maybe these shoulds come from childhood,
Rules about what it meant to be good,
Worthy,
Or lovable.
Maybe they come from faith traditions that dictated what was acceptable.
Maybe they came from family,
Culture,
Or society.
Some of these shoulds may have guided you at one point.
Others may feel heavy now,
Like clothes that no longer fit.
What are you holding onto simply because you were told you should?
Imagine yourself standing in front of a mirror.
But instead of seeing yourself,
You see a version of you covered in words.
Each word is a should that has shaped you.
Some might say,
I should be selfless.
I should be quiet.
I should always have the right answer.
I should put others before myself.
One by one,
Begin to peel these words away.
With each one,
Ask yourself,
Is this truly mine to keep?
With each word you remove,
Notice the space you've created for new ideas,
For new ways of being.
Let yourself simply observe what arises,
Whether it's relief,
Discomfort,
Or something in between.
Underneath the shoulds,
There is still you,
Whole,
Worthy,
And free.
Now take a deep breath and gently ask yourself,
Who am I without the shoulds?
Maybe there is silence.
Maybe the answer is still forming.
That's okay.
Give yourself permission to not have a complete answer.
Just notice what comes up.
Instead of I should,
What if you asked,
What do I want?
What feels true for me?
What if I trusted myself instead of seeking approval?
Breathe in.
I am allowed to define myself.
Breathe out.
I release what no longer fits.
Breathe in.
I trust my own wisdom.
Breathe out.
I do not have to be what I was told to be.
Imagine yourself walking away from the mirror,
Carrying only what feels true to you.
The shoulds may still whisper.
They don't have to hold power.
Could you make space to believe that you are more than expectations?
Could you make space to believe that you are more than what others have told you to be?
Could you make space to believe you are allowed to become yourself?
Take one more deep breath,
Feeling the space you've created within yourself.
When you're ready,
Slowly bring awareness back to the present moment.
Wiggle your fingers,
Roll your shoulders,
Blink your eyes open.
You can return to this reflection whenever you need.
You are always allowed to choose who you are.
