A prayer for when worry won't let go.
Wherever you're listening from,
Let yourself arrive here.
You might be sitting,
Lying down,
Or simply taking a moment away from everything.
However you are right now is just fine.
Let your breath flow.
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
And once more,
In,
Out.
And out.
Let's pray together.
God,
I come to you with a mind that won't quite settle.
My thoughts keep running ahead of me,
To tomorrow,
To next week,
To all of the things that might go wrong.
I've tried to think my way through it,
To plan for every possibility,
And still the worry stays.
So here I am,
Not with answers,
But with an open heart.
I bring you the fears I speak out loud and the ones I barely admit to myself.
I bring you the people I love and can't protect from everything.
I bring you the decisions I'm afraid to get wrong.
Remind me that I don't have to hold the whole future in my hands.
That was never my job.
My job is only this day,
This hour,
This breath.
When my thoughts race,
Slow me down.
When my chest feels tight,
Help me to breathe a little deeper.
When I imagine the worst,
Gently turn my eyes back to what is true right now.
And what is true right now is that I am here.
I am breathing.
I have made it through every hard day that came before this one.
And I have not been alone in any of them.
Thank you for the ways you've carried me before,
Even when I didn't notice.
The friend who called at just the right time.
The unexpected kindness.
The strength I didn't know I had until I needed it.
If you were faithful then,
I can trust that you'll be faithful now.
So I place my worries in your care.
Not because they're small,
But because you are bigger.
I place my family in your care.
I place my plans in your care.
I place my tired heart in your care.
And in return,
I ask for peace.
Not the kind of peace that comes when every problem is solved,
But the deeper kind.
The peace that holds steady even while things are still uncertain.
Let that peace settle into my shoulders,
My jaw,
My hands.
Let it quiet the noise in my mind,
One thought at a time.
God,
When the worry comes back,
And it may,
Help me to remember this moment,
Help me to return here,
To this breath,
To this trust,
As many times as I need to.
You are with me in the waiting.
You are with me in the not knowing.
You are with me now.
In Jesus' name I pray,
Amen.
Stay here as long as you like,
Breathing slowly,
Resting in the knowledge that you are held.
And when you are ready,
Carry this piece with you into whatever comes next.
