Hello and welcome.
Maybe you're walking home from a first date.
Or maybe you've just returned to your office after a big meeting.
Maybe you're driving home from dinner with friends.
The conversation is over.
Everyone else has probably moved on with their evening.
But your mind hasn't.
You can't stop wondering if you said the wrong thing.
Maybe a joke didn't land the way that you hoped it would.
Or maybe someone gave you a strange look while you were speaking.
Maybe there was a moment of silence that your mind keeps replaying.
Trying to figure out what it meant.
Or maybe nothing obvious happened at all.
And yet your mind is searching anyway.
Looking for the moment where you somehow got it wrong.
If any of that feels familiar,
You are not alone.
Many thoughtful,
Caring people experience this.
When we value connection,
Our minds sometimes try to protect us by replaying conversations,
Searching for mistakes,
Hoping that if we analyze everything thoroughly enough,
Then we'll somehow guarantee better outcomes the next time.
It's an understandable impulse.
But right now.
We're going to try something a little different.
Not by forcing the thoughts away.
Not by convincing ourselves that everything went perfectly.
But by gently teaching the mind.
That the conversation is over.
And that this moment deserves our attention now.
So whenever you're ready.
Allow yourself to settle into a comfortable position.
You might be sitting in a chair with your feet resting comfortably on the floor.
You may be lying down with your hands resting gently by your sides or on your belly.
Whatever position you've chosen.
See if you can allow your body to feel fully supported.
Take a moment to notice the places where your body meets the chair.
The bed.
Or the floor beneath you.
There is nothing to hold yourself up against.
Just allow yourself to be supported.
If it feels comfortable.
Gently close your eyes.
Or simply soften your gaze.
Take a slow,
Deep breath in through your nose.
Allowing your belly to rise.
And exhale through your mouth.
As though you're gently blowing out a candle.
Again,
A slow breath in.
And a long,
Unhurried breath out.
One more time.
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
There is nowhere you need to go.
Nothing you need to resolve.
Just this breath.
Just this moment.
Now we'll spend a few moments gently checking in with the body.
Not trying to change anything.
Just simply noticing.
Bring your attention now to the top of your head.
Notice any sensations there.
Maybe it feels warm.
Or perhaps it feels cool.
Or maybe you don't notice anything at all.
Allow your attention to move down to your forehead.
See if there's any tension you've been carrying without realizing it.
If it feels natural,
Allow the muscles of your forehead to soften.
Notice your eyes resting comfortably in your head.
Allow those tiny muscles around your eyes to relax.
Unclench your jaw if you've been holding it tightly.
Perhaps letting your teeth separate just slightly.
Let your tongue rest gently in your mouth.
Now notice your neck.
And your shoulders.
Many of us carry the weight of our day in our shoulders.
See if your shoulders can drop just a little.
As if they've been given permission to just let go.
Bring your attention now to your arms.
Your elbows.
Now your forearms.
Your hands.
Notice whatever sensations are present.
Perhaps it's warmth.
Or coolness.
Or tingling.
Maybe it's heaviness or stillness.
Without judging any of it.
Bring your awareness now to your chest.
Notice the gentle rise and fall of each breath.
Without changing it.
Just observe it.
Allow your awareness to move down into your stomach.
If you notice tightness here,
See if you can make space for it.
Not forcing it away.
Just allowing your next breath to soften around it.
Continue now down to your hips.
Now bring your awareness further down to your thighs.
Now to your knees.
Continue to move your awareness down to your calves.
Your ankles.
And finally,
Bring your awareness down to the soles of your feet.
Feeling the weight of them resting exactly where they are.
Feel your whole body being supported.
Breathing.
Present.
Now you may notice your mind wandering and returning back to the conversation.
Perhaps for playing a sentence,
A facial expression,
A pause,
Or a moment that feels suddenly very important.
If that happens.
.
.
Simply notice.
And note to yourself.
My mind is replaying the conversation.
Nothing has gone wrong.
This is simply what the mind has learned to do.
Imagine placing whatever the thought is onto a leaf.
And imagine that you've placed the leaf.
Into a downward flowing stream.
You don't need to push the leaf away.
And you don't need to chase after it.
Simply place it in the stream and let it float away.
Then gently return to your breath.
And your body.
Again,
The mind may wander.
And again,
You notice.
And you return.
Each return is the practice.
Every time you notice yourself caught in replay.
You're strengthening a different pathway.
A pathway of returning to what is happening right now.
Instead of trying to solve what has already passed,
Take another slow breath in.
And out.
Notice this breath has never happened before.
Notice this moment has already passed.
Life is happening right here.
Not five minutes ago,
And not tomorrow morning.
Right here,
Right now.
There may always be things that you never know.
You may never know what someone else was thinking.
Whether they interpreted your words the way that you intended.
Or whether they even notice the thing that your mind has been replaying.
And perhaps you don't have to know.
Maybe peace doesn't come from finding clarity.
Maybe peace comes from making room for the uncertainty.
And choosing to come back.
Again and again.
To this moment.
To this breath.
To this life that is unfolding right now.
As we begin to close our practice.
Take one more slow breath in.
And let it go.
Remember.
Your mind replayed the conversation because it was trying to protect you.
It wasn't trying to make your life more difficult.
It was trying in its own imperfect way to keep you connected.
Accepted and safe.
You don't need to argue with your mind.
And you don't need to believe every thought that it offers you.
Sometimes the kindest response is simply to say,
Thank you,
Mind.
The conversation belongs in the past now.
I am here.
Take a final deep breath in.
And out.
Feel the support beneath you.
Feel your body.
Feel this moment.
And when you're ready.
You may gently wiggle your fingers.
Wiggle your toes.
And allow your eyes to open slowly.
And as you continue with the rest of your day or your evening.
May you carry a little less weight.
And a little more kindness towards yourself.
And the gentle reminder that you don't have to replay your life fully to live it.
Thank you for practicing with me today.
Be well.
