'The Doctor’s Family' (1861) by Scottish author Margaret Oliphant is a beautifully observed Victorian novella, set in the fictional English town of Carlingford, a little out from London. Chapter 17 follows Nettie through the first morning after everything has changed. She quietly begins separating herself from the household, sorting possessions and preparing for a future that no longer includes her familiar role. Seeking air and clarity, Nettie goes out alone - only to run into Dr Rider. Their tense meeting, charged with pride, restraint, and long-suppressed feeling, reaches an emotional breaking point when Freddy intervenes, forcing Nettie at last to relinquish her rigid self-command. By the chapter’s end, long-standing barriers have finally collapsed, and the course of Nettie’s life is decisively and irrevocably altered... See the full playlist for "The Doctor's Family".
