'The Doctor’s Family' (1861) by Scottish author Margaret Oliphant is a beautifully observed Victorian novella, set in the fictional English town of Carlingford, a little out from London. Chapter 14 deepens Nettie’s inner conflict, as Christmas approaches in Carlingford. While others speculate freely about her future, Nettie is shown quietly bearing the weight of decisions that will change her life. A chance encounter and a well-meaning conversation force her to confront assumptions being made about her intentions, her sacrifices and her heart.
