One day,

I forgot who I was,

Where I was going,

And what I believed.

So,

I decided to peace out.

Part of love is letting people go.

To do what they need to do,

To get where they need to be.

Even if it's wrong,

Weird or silly of them.

Because love runs to meet those places.

The darkness,

It's acceptance,

Not denial.

Patience,

Kindness,

Generosity.

And that's also part of what it means to be a friend.

And you could say,

I really needed one.

But instead,

I got a we.

Who are they?

Beats me.

It's not easy leaving you behind us.

But don't we all have the best for her in mind?

We're gonna breathe deep,

The sweet release of cold and white summer beers.

And so,

Off I went.

I wanted to be incredible,

But more than anything,

To be seen.

So I dressed in weird clothes,

Wore a hat to look sharp,

Paid obsessive attention to my hair.

I dressed up and messed up,

Began to hide my very self.

And I forgot what that self was.

First I'd be here.

I only knew.

Get ready.

That I could never let it out.

One third for her,

That's all you need.

So,

Who's Debbie,

You ask?

Well,

One night,

I had a dream.

Of a family watching a living room TV.

On the TV,

There was a silly looking giraffe.

She wore her big,

Beautiful face with such lovable pride.

Red lipstick,

Violet eyeshadow,

And lashes as licked as her paintbrushes.

She imbued quirkiness,

Laughter,

And light.

I named her Debbie.

A cute name,

And the name of a bartender I used to work with.

Debbie showed me that I could live like that.

And that in spite of all my walls and beliefs,

Somewhere and somehow,

Deep down,

I was beloved.

And good enough to be precious,

Even at my most absurd.

And precious in sacred simplicity,

Just like her.

Just because.

No reason,

Nothing was accomplished,

Nothing was done.

Just because.

Just like her mug,

That messy,

Childlike work of art.

Just beloved.

So,

Let's try to remember that original innocence.

And let's not forget we,

The human beings.

Are constantly trying and falling.

Breaking things,

Making things,

Failing and succeeding.

To color these portraits we call our lives.

I've read that worth is declared.

Or maybe not declared,

But remembered.

Come back soon,

Cause I need you and I miss you.

Oh, I do love this! My kiddo graduated from high school last night and I know this audio will be very impactful for the new grad. I plan to aim this that direction, and I have bookmarked AND downloaded it for myself. 🥰

You said you expect as you do more of these, you will get better. Practice often does that. To help you a touch, perhaps, I thought that as a former audiobook technical editor and audio engineer, I might offer the tidbit of advice to take the backing song vocals down a notch or two while being overlaid with the speaking voice. The two language tracks compete with each other too much when at similar levels. For me, I personally try to attend to the less-distinct sound input (singing, in this case) and that tends to block awareness of the spoken words. As the singing is so soft and gentle, at times the words are a bit indistinct, causing even more diversion of attention. (I became a mental health/psychology/disability services professional decades ago.) I think your work is amazing already, and a few minor tweaks will only elevate it even more.
