Rustling Autumn Leaves In A Breeze

I have been trying to capture the sound of leaves being rustled by the wind for some time now. It poses a lot of challenges for recording.

You need enough wind to be able to get the leaves to generate enough sound, but not so much wind that it disturbs your microphones and causes issues with the audio.

To date, I've struggled to find the right balance... until now at least.

On this occasion, I managed to capture a modest amount of autumnal leaves being rustled by the breeze. Because the sound is so delicate, you have to have the gain set very high on your microphones to get a good signal. Sadly, this tends to mean it picks up cars on roads that are miles away too.

This section had the least amount of cars, thankfully. The more I listen, the more I hear something new. Cows mooing, dogs barking in the distance occasionally, birds chatting away and I'm sure I even hear a distant woodpecker at the beginning of the audio recording chipping away at a tree.

What immersive sound! It felt like I was there in this space. I can't think of a better way to meditate than outdoors in nature. I applaud your work (even with the cars in the background). It was lovely. I grew up in the U.S. (I didn't note where you're from) in Michigan with lots of beautiful tall trees that made this same rustling sound. Then, as an adult, I moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Not many trees here that provide that same rustling. 😁Thank you for gifting me this nostalgia. 🙏
