Whisking Winds & Creaking Trees
by Ryan Garner
I've been waiting for an opportunity to test out my gigantic wind blimp. The function of this is to protection the microphones from very strong winds. You'll likely have seen them on the end of a boom pole and used in films, they look like giant hairy wombats. Today, I finally had the opportunity to test its resistance with some pretty strong winds. I placed it, with the microphones inside, in a large, old Oak tree and listened to it swaying and creaking under the pressure of the wind. The wind itself almost reminds me of ocean waves in some sections. It has that familiar "hissing" noise generated by crashing waves - almost a white noise sort of sound. I've found this best listened to with headphones & at a respectable volume. Some of the wind can be pretty wild.
