The Fox Story
I love writing stories, and I also enjoy reading them to you. This story is about a fox, a nice fox who wouldn't harm a fly or any other creature. Listen to the story and find out what happens when the fox discovers some chickens. I ask a question at the end of the story. I look forward to reading your answer. Enjoy my story.

Hello,
My name is Jacqueline and I enjoy writing stories.
I also enjoy reading them to you.
So settle down and make yourself comfortable because here's my new story.
The Fox The sun has set and darkness is falling.
The fox peeks out of his lair which is well hidden behind bushes and twigs.
He has been sleeping for most of the day and now he's hungry.
He always waits until it's completely dark before he goes out to search for food in the nearby streets.
He feels safer then.
During daylight hours humans seem scared of him and they scream and sometimes even throw things but he's really more scared of the humans and tries to keep out of their way.
The fox lives by himself although that was not through choice.
He used to live with his mum and sister but one day they went out hunting before sunset and never came back.
He waited days for them to come home.
He was a young fox cub back then and very unsure of the big wide world outside his lair.
During that time he only ate grass and berries although he did catch a mouse once but the fox couldn't bring himself to kill the little creature so he let him go and watched him run away.
The young fox was always hungry and would remember the times when he went out with his mum to find food.
They would search in the bin bags people had left outside their houses.
His mum taught him to sniff for food and only rip the bag open if it smelt good.
One night the young fox couldn't sleep because his tummy was rumbling so badly.
He realised his mum and sister weren't coming home and so he started going out on his own to look for food but always after dark.
He followed what his mum had taught him and soon created a nightly routine.
This evening the fox starts out in the usual way.
He looks around to make sure it's safe before he pushes his way through the bushes.
He then creeps along the streets,
Walking carefully on his toes so humans can't hear him.
His ears are alert for any sound and he's ready to run if he hears someone.
He never goes home hungry because his amazing sense of smell leads him to bags containing plenty of food.
The fox moves from house to house until he sees a large bin bag and quietly walks over to it.
He sniffs around the bag and can smell something delicious.
With a quick flick of his paw he slices the bag open and rummages around inside with his long pointy nose.
He searches amongst the rubbish until he finds scraps of meat and other delicious things to eat.
There is enough food in this bag to satisfy him for a few days and he eats like a king.
Feeling full,
The fox runs back in the direction of his lair,
Licking his lips with satisfaction.
As he passes through a garden the security light comes on and almost blinds him with its brilliance.
He hears a dog bark and,
Glancing over at the house,
He can see a huge dog staring at him through a window.
Suddenly there are voices and then the dog is in the garden,
Barking ferociously as he runs after the intruder.
The fox sees a high fence ahead of him and realises there is nowhere to go.
He is trapped.
With the dog approaching fast,
The fox has no other choice but to go over the fence.
He takes a big leap and scrambles up and over the fence,
Just as the snarling dog is about to grab him with his big sharp teeth.
Landing on the other side of the fence,
The fox finds himself in another garden,
But this time there is no security light and no barking dog.
He looks around and can see a small pond.
Feeling thirsty after all the commotion,
He walks over to it and takes a refreshing drink.
Now where is he?
This garden is unfamiliar to him,
But he can't be far from his home.
He walks to the end of the garden and discovers a gap in some bushes which he squeezes through.
Now he is in a large open area which is full of flowers and vegetables.
He walks around to take a look.
A little way ahead of him he sees two foxes who appear to be up to no good.
He heads towards them but they are startled by his presence and run off.
It appears they were trying to dig their way under a chicken pen.
As the fox gets up to the pen he can see the chickens who look plump and smell delicious.
Luckily for them,
The fox has a full tummy and is not hungry,
Plus the fact that he couldn't possibly kill a living creature.
At that moment the fox hears a lady calling out.
She seems to be talking to him,
But she isn't shouting at him like most humans do.
Her voice is soft and gentle,
But he isn't going to hang around and be tricked,
So he runs off and soon discovers he is not far from his lair.
The next evening,
After dark,
The fox sets off to find some food,
But first he decides to go and visit the chickens.
As he gets closer to the chicken pen he can see the chickens waddling around.
There is no sign of the other foxes or the lady,
So he walks up to the pen and sits down.
The chickens don't seem scared of him at all and they come up close to look at him.
Just then the fox hears a rustling sound nearby.
He turns in time to see the two foxes running away.
Looking back at the chickens he feels glad that he is there to protect them.
Then he hears a soft voice.
He has been so mesmerised by the chickens that he didn't hear the lady coming up behind him.
He almost runs away,
But something in her hand stops him.
She is holding a bowl containing food and the smell is making his mouth water.
Carefully the lady places the food down on the ground and steps back,
Allowing the fox to eat without fear.
It is delicious and far better than the old food he finds by scavenging in the bin bags.
When the fox has finished eating the lady goes into the chicken pen and puts her chickens away in their coop.
She makes sure they have water and food and then shuts the door securely.
The fox sits and watches her.
The lady smiles at the fox before saying good night to him as she walks away back to her house.
The fox stays where he is for a few moments,
Happy that the chickens are safe.
Then he strolls home feeling very full and pleased with how his evening has turned out.
Just before the fox falls asleep that night he makes a decision to look after the chickens every evening.
And he does.
Every evening without fail the fox sits with the chickens and soon begins to think of them as his family,
Especially as they always seem delighted to see him.
He also has a pleasant relationship with the lady who is kind and speaks gently to him.
His patience and consideration around the chickens is eventually rewarded.
The other foxes no longer bother the chickens and so in exchange for him keeping them away the lady brings him plenty of food and it is always delicious.
Thank you for listening to my story.
I hope you enjoyed it.
I'd like to ask you a question.
Would you like to have a fox as a pet?
