Hello,
My name is Jacqueline and I'd like to read you a story that I wrote.
I hope you enjoy it.
Now settle back,
Relax and I will begin.
The Cat and the Goldfish Grace was a sweet tiny grey cat,
But she was very lazy.
She spent the day lying curled up on a comfy turquoise coloured cushion her owner,
Edna,
Had bought for her.
She loved this cushion and would go around in circles upon it until it felt just right.
Then she would lay down and sleep for as long as she could before her next meal was ready.
Walking into the kitchen for her food was one of the two ways Grace exercised.
The other was when she stretched her paws out just before she rolled over to change her sleeping position.
Edna spoilt Grace.
Every evening they would curl up together on the sofa while Edna watched the television and Grace slept.
They gave each other so much love and didn't need anyone else in their life,
Or so Grace believed.
One day Grace was woken from a delightful dream in which Edna was feeding her with a spoon so she didn't have to bend down to eat her food.
She could hear the sound of running water and lifted her head to see what it was.
Edna was at the kitchen sink filling a large round glass bowl with water.
Carefully,
So as not to spill the liquid,
Edna carried the bowl into the lounge and placed it on the sideboard.
Grace watched the activity from her cushion with fascination.
What was going on?
Edna went back into the kitchen and returned with a clear plastic bag filled with water.
Something appeared to be moving in it,
But Grace couldn't quite make out what it was.
Edna opened the plastic bag and poured the contents into the bowl.
Curious to see what was in there,
Grace stood up and moved closer to get a better look.
She saw a goldfish with big googly eyes looking back at her through the glass.
Edna watched as her two pets stared at each other.
Now stay away from Rusty,
Our new pet goldfish,
 she said to Grace.
I have to pop out for a few minutes because I forgot to buy fish food for him.
Go and lie down on your cushion and you can look at each other from there.
Grace stayed where she was and continued looking at Rusty until she heard Edna leave and close the front door.
Then she jumped upon a chair which was next to the sideboard so she could be closer to the fish.
Rusty swam to where he could see Grace and they stared at each other.
A few minutes passed and Grace decided she still wasn't close enough,
So she climbed upon the sideboard and sat next to the fish bowl.
Then she put her face up against the glass and looked at Rusty.
Rusty swam around and around his bowl,
Seemingly a little intimidated by the cat's closeness.
Grace watched him.
A few minutes passed and Grace wondered how she could get even closer to the fish.
Suddenly an idea came to her and she climbed onto the rim of the fish bowl.
She tried to balance there but it wasn't easy,
Especially as Grace was not very agile through her lack of exercise.
She wobbled from side to side a few times and then she fell into the bowl.
Splash!
Now I don't know who was more shocked,
Grace or Rusty because as Grace fell into the bowl the fish flew out along with a lot of water.
Rusty flapped about on the sideboard as Grace scrabbled about in the water.
Just at that very moment Edna came home and could see immediately all the commotion that was going on.
Oh my!
She shrieked as she looked from Rusty to Grace.
How did this happen?
As quick as a flash Edna grabbed Grace from out of the fish bowl with one hand and with the other she gently picked Rusty up and put him back into the water.
She cuddled her soaking wet shivering cat and looked at Rusty who seemed to be doing fine after his ordeal as he swam around and around in his bowl.
Edna fetched a towel and wrapped Grace in it and settled her upon the cushion.
Then she added some more water to Rusty's bowl and gave him some food before wiping up the mess on the sideboard.
With everything back to normal and her two pets looking quite happy Edna made herself a well deserved cup of tea.
Grace never again tried to get up close to Rusty.
One soaking was quite sufficient for her.
She was quite content to watch him swim around in his fish bowl while she relaxed on her comfy turquoise cushion.
If you're still listening to this story I'd like to ask you a question.
What strange things have your pets done?
