Dougieโs Story
People of all ages have been enjoying my stories about a little girl called Kelti and her tiny dog, Dougie... and I am often asked how Dougie came to live with her. Well here, at last, is that story... I hope you enjoy it. Thank you for your kind messages and continued support... I appreciate them all.

Hello,
My name is Jacqueline and I'm a very proud grandma.
I write stories for my grandchildren and I'm very happy to share them with you too.
So make yourself comfortable,
Settle back because my story is about to begin.
Dougie's Story Dougie stretched out in his bed,
Ready to take a nap.
He was a tiny brown dog with three of his paws white and a shiny black nose.
He was a very happy dog and loved by his owner Kelty.
Every day Kelty would take him out for a run in the forest near their house where they had great adventures together.
Dougie's life with Kelty was a lot of fun but it could have turned out so differently.
He fell asleep as he remembered how he came to live with Kelty.
Dougie's mum was a teeny weeny Chihuahua dog who had been abandoned by her owners.
One day,
Quite unexpectedly,
They had left her in a park for reasons only they knew.
The Chihuahua wandered around the park day after day looking for her owners but they never came back for her.
She became very lonely and longed for some company.
She would often go up to other dogs she saw in the park but most of them were big dogs and didn't want to make friends with her.
One day she noticed a dog she hadn't seen before sniffing around a tree.
He was a little bigger than herself but much smaller than most of the other dogs in the park.
The Chihuahua went over to him and wagged her tail hoping he wouldn't be mean to her.
He was a Jack Russell dog and very happy to meet her.
He also didn't have a home or a family to love him and so they became good friends and spent all of their time together.
Their days were filled with fun.
They loved running around the park and there were plenty of squirrels and birds to chase and frolic with.
When they were hungry they found food in the nearby rubbish bins.
Then at night with full tummies they would sleep curled up together under some bushes.
The months passed by quickly as they enjoyed life together but one day their happiness was snatched away from them.
Early one morning a white van pulled up at the edge of the park it stopped near where the two dogs were rummaging in a rubbish bin searching for breakfast.
A big man got out of the van and started chasing the dogs.
The dogs ran as fast as they could but the man was much quicker and soon caught up with them.
He went to grab them both but only got hold of the Jack Russell.
The Chihuahua managed to slip between his legs and ran away faster than she ever thought possible.
She ran and she ran until she could run no more.
She stopped as she panted for breath while looking around to make sure the big man hadn't followed her.
She couldn't see him but she felt really scared.
The slightest noise made her jump with fright.
She needed to rest so she crawled under a bush and soon fell asleep.
The next day she decided to go and look for her friend.
At the park the van had gone and there was no sign of the Jack Russell anywhere.
She wandered around keeping to the bushes and not going too far out into the open park just in case the big man came back for her.
The days slowly passed and eventually the teeny weeny Chihuahua realised that her only friend in the whole world was never coming back.
She became lonely again as her heart ached for her friend.
She also didn't feel happy living in the park anymore.
She felt scared every day that the big man would come back again to catch her.
So she decided to leave the park and find somewhere else to live.
She set off and walked and walked.
She walked until her little legs became so tired that all she wanted to do was lie down somewhere warm and sleep.
She stopped walking and found herself outside an old barn.
There were no doors on the barn and,
Looking in,
She noticed the floor was covered in straw.
It looked very inviting and cosy to the tired little dog.
She went in to take a better look.
The barn was empty but there must have been some kind of animal living in here at one time as there was a trough near the back wall.
She pulled herself up onto the trough and was pleased to see a small amount of water lying at the bottom of it.
She clambered in and paddled for a moment.
The water felt good on her hot,
Tired paws.
She took a long drink before climbing back out of the trough.
Although she felt hungry,
She didn't have the energy to search for food.
Instead she decided to curl up in the corner on the straw and sleep.
The Chihuahua slept and slept.
The sun went down and the moon and stars came out,
Filling the barn with their sparkling,
Magical light.
In the early hours of the morning the teeny weeny dog woke with a strange pain in her belly.
No matter how much she wriggled and turned,
The pain would not go away.
Instead it became worse.
She thought it was because she was hungry.
She lifted her head and noticed it was still dark outside,
Too dark to go searching for food.
So she closed her eyes and tried to get back to sleep,
Hoping by morning the pain would be gone.
But the pain became far worse before it eventually did stop.
And then she heard a whimper.
She opened her eyes and to her surprise she saw a tiny puppy lying beneath her.
The Chihuahua realised this was her puppy.
She licked him gently and then tucked him up against her as she covered him with her paws.
She was so surprised by his appearance but felt very happy now that she had someone to love.
The puppy was cold and hungry and whimpered louder.
She fed him and loved him and kept him warm and safe.
The tiny puppy grew stronger and became more and more inquisitive as each day passed.
Soon he wanted to leave the barn and go out and explore.
His mum decided to take him to the park where she used to live and they set off.
As they walked she explained about her special friend the Jack Russell dog and told him about the wonderful time they had spent together.
They arrived at the park and enjoyed a fun day,
Exploring different places and running around after the squirrels and the birds.
They were just deciding whether to go back to the barn for the night or stay in the bushes when the Chihuahua saw the white van pull up beside them.
As quick as a flash,
Before she had time to run,
The same big man jumped out and picked her up.
She called to her son to run as fast as he could away from the park just as the man threw her into the back of his van.
The puppy did as he was told and ran and ran until he had no breath left.
He stopped running and gasped for air as he realised his mum had been taken from him,
The same way as her friend had been taken from her.
What am I going to do?
He said to himself.
I've never been alone before.
He felt sad and frightened.
His mum had loved him with all her heart and he missed her so much already.
Tears fell down his cheeks and he decided to find somewhere to sleep.
His mum used to tell him that after a good night's sleep everything would seem much better in the morning.
He looked around and realised he was on the edge of a forest.
The tall trees looked as if they would protect him.
He no longer wanted to be out in open spaces like the park as it seemed far too dangerous there for a tiny dog.
He walked a little way into the forest and found a pile of leaves under a big oak tree to curl up on.
He made himself comfortable and closed his eyes.
As he tried to sleep he remembered seeing the scared look on his mum's face as the big man grabbed her.
The puppy cried again.
He didn't want this memory in his head.
He loved his mum and wanted to be happy when he thought about her.
He moved himself into a different position on the pile of leaves and then thought of all the fun times he had enjoyed with his mum and with happy thoughts on his mind he went to sleep.
The next morning the puppy was woken by something tickling his nose.
He opened his eyes and saw a pink twitchy nose sniffing his nose.
Startled he jumped up and ran behind the big oak tree.
Hey,
I won't hurt you said the white rabbit who had been sniffing the puppy.
I was seeing if you were awake.
The puppy came out from behind the big oak tree and looked at the rabbit.
You're much bigger than me remarked the puppy.
Are you a giant?
No said the rabbit laughing.
I'm a normal size rabbit but you are the tiniest dog I have ever seen.
My mum is only teeny weeny said the puppy.
Where is your mum?
Asked the rabbit looking around for her.
She was caught by the dog warden yesterday said the puppy sadly.
She told me to run as fast as I could so he wouldn't catch me too and now I am all alone.
Well you're not alone now said the rabbit.
You're with me.
Are you hungry?
Oh yes I'm starving said the puppy just as his tummy rumbled.
Come with me said the rabbit hopping off.
The puppy followed the rabbit out of the forest and they arrived at a patch of ground filled with things growing in straight lines.
What is this?
Asked the puppy never having seen anything like this before.
They are vegetables growing answered the rabbit.
These are the best carrots for miles around.
The rabbit hopped a little way into the vegetable patch and then started digging around some big fluffy leaves.
As he dug a carrot which had been growing in the soil slowly started to appear.
The rabbit stopped digging and then pulled the carrot out from the ground and held it out to the puppy.
Here take a bite he said.
The puppy took a bite.
Mmm that is so sweet and delicious he said taking another bite.
You finish that one and I'll dig for another said the rabbit dropping the carrot on the ground in front of the puppy and then digging up another for himself.
They ate their fill and then went back to the forest where they played amongst the trees.
Soon the puppy felt exhausted and went to curl up on the pile of leaves under the big oak tree.
Don't sleep there said the rabbit.
Why not?
Asked the puppy.
I slept on these leaves last night and they are lovely and soft.
You were lucky something didn't eat you while you slept said the rabbit.
Here let me show you how to dig a tunnel to sleep in.
It will keep you safe from predators that might be hungry.
The rabbit showed the puppy how to dig with his front paws throwing the soil out behind him between his back legs.
This is fun said the puppy as he gave it a try.
I like digging and his little paws went crazy throwing the soil high in the air behind him.
The rabbit watched him for a moment and then said I think that's enough digging now.
Otherwise it will be too deep and you won't be able to climb out of it.
The puppy crawled into the hole.
He felt very protected and safe and fell straight to sleep.
Early the next morning the puppy woke up to the sound of the birds chirping overhead.
He crawled out of the hole and looked around.
On one of the branches of the big oak tree he saw a pretty blue bird.
He smiled at the blue bird and then looked around for the rabbit but he was nowhere to be seen.
The tiny puppy had been left alone again.
He wondered if he would ever find someone who would love him as much as his mum had.
He felt hungry but couldn't remember how to get to the carrot patch.
He was deciding which direction he should go in when he heard a noise coming from a pile of leaves by the big oak tree.
He watched the leaves move in total fascination.
I wonder what is in the leaves he thought to himself.
He was about to go and take a look when a few leaves parted and a pointy nose poked out followed by the prickly body of a hedgehog.
The puppy went up to the hedgehog and tried to sniff him but the hedgehog's spine pricked his nose and he yelped in pain.
You got too close said the hedgehog unsympathetically.
I don't take kindly to being sniffed.
He looked closely at the puppy before saying I haven't seen you around here before.
The puppy rubbed his nose with his paw and then told the hedgehog his story.
The hedgehog listened and then said I know how you feel.
I lost my mum when I was very young too.
She was teaching me how to cross the road when she got run over by a car.
Now I don't go near roads.
I just stay around the forest.
Open spaces don't seem the safest places for animals said the puppy saddened by the hedgehog's story.
Are you hungry?
Asked the hedgehog.
Yes I am answered the puppy.
I would dig for more carrots like the rabbit taught me but I can't remember where the carrot patch is.
Oh digging is such hard work said the hedgehog.
I like an easier life.
Come with me.
The puppy followed the hedgehog out of the forest and across a well-kept lawn towards a house.
Near the back door of the house was a saucer of milk with some bread soaked into it.
Try this said the hedgehog standing to one side so the puppy could get to the saucer.
The puppy sniffed at the contents of the saucer.
It smelt good.
He lapped up some of the contents.
It tasted good.
He lapped up some more.
Save some for me said the hedgehog realising that the puppy could quite easily finish all of the contents in one go.
The puppy stood back and licked his lips.
He had never tasted anything so delicious before.
At that moment the door opened and out came a little girl.
The puppy went to run away but the hedgehog told him not to be scared.
This little girl is kind said the hedgehog.
She leaves food out for me every day.
She won't hurt you.
I've got to get back to the forest but you could stay and get to know her.
The hedgehog moved away and the puppy stood still as the little girl came up to him.
Hello puppy,
She said kneeling down next to him.
What's your name?
She noticed he didn't have a collar on.
Do you belong to anyone?
She asked gently.
She held her hand out so the puppy could sniff her.
The puppy liked this little girl.
He felt safe with her.
I'm Kelty said the little girl.
She stroked the puppy and he jumped upon her lap.
Kelty laughed as the tiny puppy wagged his tail and licked her face as if saying hello.
You are so tiny and the cutest little puppy I've ever seen said Kelty.
Would you like some sausages?
She carried the puppy into the kitchen and opened the fridge door.
She reached in for a plate holding four cooked chunky sausages.
These smelt really good to the puppy,
Even better than the bread and milk the hedgehog had shared with him.
Kelty put the puppy onto the floor while she chopped up a sausage into tiny pieces and placed them into a bowl.
There you are,
She said,
Setting the bowl before the excited puppy who ate every morsel hungrily.
At that moment Kelty's mum came into the kitchen.
Who is this?
She asked Kelty as the tiny puppy went over and sniffed her feet.
I don't know mum,
Replied Kelty.
He was outside when I went to check on the hedgehog.
He doesn't have a collar on so maybe he doesn't belong to anyone.
Can he stay with us,
Please?
He may not have a collar but he may have an owner who is looking for him,
Said her mum.
We should try and find out if he belongs to someone.
Imagine how sad you would be if you lost your pet.
Kelty felt a little disappointed but she knew her mum was right.
After giving the puppy a drink of water and watching him lick his bowl for the hundredth time,
They took him to the animal shelter.
The people at the animal shelter were very kind and explained that if no one came forward to claim the puppy they would let Kelty's mum know and give them the opportunity to keep him if they wanted to.
As each day passed Kelty couldn't stop thinking about the tiny puppy and imagined what life would be like if he came to live with her.
She had always wanted a little dog to have fun adventures with.
Her mum often said that they would get a puppy when the time was right.
Kelty didn't really know what this meant.
It seemed to be something adults said just to get out of doing something.
Kelty often wondered when the time would be right.
Every day felt the right time to her.
A few weeks later Kelty's mum had a call from the animal shelter.
No one had come forward to claim the tiny puppy and they asked her if they were interested in adopting him.
Oh can we keep him mum please mum?
Asked Kelty.
Her mum thought for a moment and then said I think now is the right time.
Yes Kelty we can keep him.
Kelty threw her arms around her mum.
Thank you mum,
She said squeezing her tightly.
Can we go and get him now?
He's probably lonely at the animal shelter.
I doubt he is lonely said her mum smiling but yes let's go and bring your new pet home.
What are you going to call him?
Asked her mum as they got into the car.
I'm not sure yet replied Kelty doing up her seat belt.
No doubt you'll think of something appropriate soon enough said her mum as they set off.
That first day together was a lot of fun.
The tiny puppy didn't seem to want to leave Kelty's side and ran around with her everywhere she went.
In the afternoon Kelty sat on the lawn enjoying the sunshine as she read one of her books.
The puppy had been quite content to lie beside her but soon became bored and started to run around the garden exploring.
After a few minutes Kelty realised that she couldn't see or hear the puppy.
She placed her book on the lawn and went to find him.
It wasn't long before he made his presence known as Kelty saw soil flying through the air at the bottom of the garden.
Kelty walked over and there she saw the puppy quite happily digging up carrots in her dad's vegetable patch.
Kelty laughed although she knew her dad would not find it quite so funny.
She picked up the tiny puppy and smiled at his funny little face which was covered in dirt.
You do look a mess she said but you are still the cutest puppy I have ever seen.
I'm going to call you Duggee but you must not dig any more in my dad's garden.
He will not be happy.
Come on let's get you cleaned up before dinner.
Tomorrow we will start our adventures together.
I think we will explore the forest first.
It will be a safer place for you to dig.
And that's how Duggee came to live with Kelty.
Duggee stirred in his bed as he was awakened by Kelty calling his name.
Duggee wake up sleepy head Kelty said lovingly as she bent down and stroked his tummy.
Let's go for a walk in the forest.
It's time for another adventure.
I hope you enjoyed listening to my story.
Before you go I'd like to ask you a question.
If you own a pet how did your pet come to live with you?
Thanks again for listening and come back soon to hear another story from Grandma.
Bye for now.
