When Rejection Hurts: Understand And Heal The Pain Of Rejection Sensitivity

With Alison Potts

Many people experience strong emotional reactions when they sense the possibility of rejection. A delayed message, a brief exchange, or an unexpected silence can suddenly trigger intense self-doubt, analysis, or the urge to repair connection immediately. This is often called rejection sensitivity, and it is closely connected to how our nervous system stores memories of past experiences of belonging and uncertain or broken connection. In this short course, you’ll learn how to understand these reactions, and instead of spiralling, create safety and calm in your nervous system when they arise. In addition, you will be offered a raft of effective, practical ways to respond to emotional triggers around perceived rejection, with grounding and calm, rather than urgency. You’ll explore: • why rejection can feel so physically painful • how the nervous system stores memories of past disconnection • a powerful body-based practice to calm the rejection response • journaling prompts that help you recognise the “echo” of past experiences • simple real-life strategies for pausing the urge to repair or over-explain These short modules are designed to help you stay on your own side, support your nervous system, and respond to moments of perceived rejection with more clarity and self-compassion. You don’t have to eliminate sensitivity to feel stronger on the inside.

Lesson 1

Understanding Rejection Sensitivity

In this first session, we explore why feelings of rejection can sometimes hit the nervous system with surprising intensity. Many people assume these reactions mean something is wrong with them, but in reality they are often the nervous system responding to the possibility of disconnection. Understanding this pattern can bring immediate relief and begin to change the way we meet these moments and help us use awareness as our first step in responding to our fear in healthy, healing ways.

Lesson 2

A Calming, Grounding Practice For When Rejection Hits

In this session, we move from understanding to experience. You’ll learn a simple body-based practice that can help interrupt the spiral that often follows feelings of rejection. Rather than trying to think your way out of the reaction, this practice supports the nervous system directly, helping the body settle so that the mind can regain perspective.

Lesson 3

Journaling Enquiry: Recognising The Echo

In this session, we explore rejection sensitivity through reflection and journaling. Writing can help you recognise patterns in how these reactions arise and how they have been shaped by past experiences. The goal is not to analyse yourself harshly, but to gently understand the emotional echoes that may still be influencing your reactions today. If you prefer, instead of writing, you can answer the questions out loud to yourself.

Lesson 4

Responding Positively: Practical Strategies For When Rejection Strikes

Often the urge is to repair, explain, or seek reassurance immediately. While those impulses are understandable, they can escalate anxiety and maintain the rejection-fear loop. In this session, we explore practical ways to respond differently when rejection sensitivity appears and ultimately, break the patterns that dial up the inner alarm.

Lesson 5

Recognising Progress And Staying on Track

In our session together, we'll reflect on what you have learned and how these practices may begin to shift your experience over time. Change in the nervous system often happens gradually through repeated experiences of support and understanding. Each moment you pause, notice, and respond with self-compassion and a wise, supportive tool, you are installing more and inner safety and room for you to have a different emotional response. And that, my friend, is liberating. Congratulations on taking and completing this journey. Come back to any of the sessions, any time. I'd love to hear how you got on - so please feel free to share in the classroom comments section. Sending all my support and belief in you, Alison
