I am Don Joseph Goewey, and this is an introduction to my three-part series entitled "The Grandeur Within," subtitled "The art and science of awakening to what you are already." In Part 1, titled Grandeur Unveiled, we explored the truth of what you are—your innate beauty, creativity, and inner strength. Now, in Part 2—Grandeur Obstructed—we shift our focus to what gets in the way. This section addresses the question: If I were born with such grandeur, why is that not my experience? In this section, we will explore the psychological and societal forces that have divided our minds and created confusion about our true wholeness. The third and final course, Grandeur Awakened, turns inward, shifting from universal truths to personal experience. Here, I share my own journey of healing and transformation through surrender and Grace, demonstrating how anyone, even under unfavorable conditions, can transcend suffering, fragmentation, and misperception to recover wholeness. So, let's step into Part 3, Grandeur Awakened.


Meet your Teacher

Don Joseph Goewey is the author of Mystic Cool: The Neuroplasticity of Attitude, The End of Stress: Four Steps to Rewire Your Brain, and Fishing for Fallen Light. He also edited two books on Anthony De Mello's spiritual insights and created the “Science of Ending Stress” course here at Insight Timer. Previously, Don worked at Stanford University Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry. He studied with Carl Rogers, considered one of the ten most influential psychologists of the 20th century, and he worked with psychiatrist Gerald Jampolsky, who pioneered an approach to psychology based on A Course in Miracles. Don later directed the Center for Attitudinal Healing, which developed methods to help people overcome catastrophic life events. The Center’s work was featured on 60 Minutes and in an Emmy-winning documentary hosted by Mr. Rogers, and it received the Excellence in Medicine citation from the American Medical Association. Don spent six years in a think tank environment that integrated neuroscience, psychology, and practical spiritual principles into an approach that alleviates stress and amplifies higher-order brain function, enabling people to flourish. This approach proved effective in high-stress corporate environments, including Fortune 100 companies. He currently directs the Center for Spiritual Exchange, which was originally founded at Fordham University by Anthony De Mello in 1986.

Unfavorable Conditions

This lesson asserts that the unfavorable conditions we might come from or find ourselves in can become the very ground for grace to enter. This lesson challenges the belief that spiritual growth requires ideal circumstances. Trauma, loss, fear, or failure can dissolve the hardened layers of pain, revealing a deeper resilience and wisdom. Transformation often begins not when life is delightful, but when it humbles and strips us bare. By bringing awareness to your response to difficulty, you begin to transmute pain into insight and resistance into freedom.

Lesson 2

Breaking Into Wholeness

This lesson explores how suffering, though often feared and suppressed, can become the gateway for Grace to enter, bringing a profound understanding. Life’s disruptions can weaken our carefully constructed defenses, allowing the deeper, unified sense of Self to re-emerge, revealing that wholeness comes not from extricating ourselves of shortcomings and foibles but from embracing every part of ourselves, light and shadow alike. Through honest, compassionate acceptance, our inherent grandeur rises, and we live from a place of fearless authenticity, unconditional happiness, and boundless compassion.

Lesson 3

Two Forces

In seeing through the painful stories we have been living, we come to forgiveness, and through forgiveness, become instruments of compassion and kindness. Goewey recites his narrative poem Breaking Into Wholeness, which maps his journey to forgiving his stepfather.

Lesson 4

A Return to Love

This lesson explores how forgiveness liberates the heart and clears the path to freedom. By recognizing how old wounds can imprison us, we free ourelves for happiness. Forgiveness is the key to happiness. In letting go of judgment and blame, we awaken to joy and freedom, discovering that healing is less about becoming more loving and more about unblocking the love we are already.

Lesson 5

Ordinary Magic

This lesson explores the timeless quest for the Holy Grail as a metaphor for your soul’s search for wholeness. It reveals that what you seek—peace, fulfillment, freedom, and connection—has always been within you. The Grail is not a jewel-studded chalice found in a castle in a distant land. You are the jewel-studded chalice that you discover in ordinary moments, when you awaken to beauty surrounding you. When you let go of the quest, the treasure you were seeking suddenly appears.

Ordinary Beauty

This lesson invites us to attune our hearts to the sacred moments Grace quietly weaves into ordinary life. These moments awaken us to the simple beauty unfolding all around us. They invite us to pause and notice—a flower breaking through pavement, sunlight dancing through blinds, or the rich scent of earth after rain. These gentle invitations ask only for our presence, reminding us that beauty is never elusive or distant; it simply awaits our attention.

Awakening Grandeur

This lesson invites you to reconnect with the natural world as a pathway to inner clarity, joy, and creative flow of the grandeur within you. It explores how time in nature dissolves the ego's noise and restores our sense of balance. Nature reminds you of your abundance. Walk out in nature in any direction and you will rediscover it there.
