Stop OCD Compulsions - Learning To Stay With The Urge

With Dr Liz White

OCD often creates a powerful urge to do something like check, seek reassurance, analyse, avoid, repeat, confess, or try to get certainty. This six day course will teach you the skill of urge surfing - a practical, evidence-based technique often used with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to help you stay with uncomfortable urges without automatically acting on them. Across six short lessons and guided practices, you'll learn how to: - Recognise urges earlier - Create space between an obsessional thought/doubt and a compulsion - Observe urges without immediately responding - Learn to tolerate discomfort and uncertainty - Understand that urges rise and fall naturally - Choose actions based on what matters to you rather than what OCD demands Each day builds on the last, helping you develop confidence in your ability to respond differently when OCD shows up. By the end of the course, you'll have a practical skill you can continue using in your everyday life whenever urges to engage in compulsions arise. Please note: This course is designed to complement, not replace, professional mental health support. If you are struggling significantly with OCD or your mental health, please seek support from a qualified healthcare professional.

Lesson 1

Learning Not To Act When An OCD Urge Hits

Welcome to Day 1. This lesson lays the foundation for the rest of the course. You'll begin exploring the difference between an urge and an action, and practise noticing urges without immediately responding to them. It's a simple skill, but one that can make a powerful difference when OCD shows up.

Lesson 2

Getting To Know Urges

Welcome to Day 2. In this practice, you’ll use a simple physical urge - such as the urge to bite or chew a mint, sweet, or piece of chocolate - to explore what an urge feels like in the body. You’ll practise noticing the build-up, the pull to act (like swallow, bite or chew), and the difference between reacting automatically and choosing your response with awareness.

Lesson 3

Recognising OCD Patterns

Welcome to Day 3. In this practice, you’ll begin to recognise your own OCD patterns by looking at the link between urges and compulsions. Using recent, manageable OCD moments, you’ll identify what OCD was commanding you to do, what may have come just before the compulsion, and how familiar urges can lead to familiar responses.

Lesson 4

Slowing The Urge Down

Welcome to Day 4. In this practice, you’ll learn how to slow down an OCD urge so you can recognise it earlier. Using a recent, manageable OCD moment, you’ll replay the experience gently, like a video - frame by frame- to notice the first signs that OCD was beginning to pull for your attention - before the compulsion happened.

Lesson 5

Surf The Urge

Welcome to Day 5. In this practice, you’ll bring together the skills you’ve been building by learning how to “surf” an OCD urge. Using the imagery of an urge as an ocean wave, you’ll practise allowing it to rise, peak, and fall without automatically responding to it with a compulsion.

Lesson 6

Choosing What Matters

Welcome to the last day of this course. In this final practice, you’ll shift from resisting compulsions to choosing what matters. Using the image of a fork in the road, you’ll explore the difference between following OCD’s familiar path and taking a step towards the life you want to build - even when uncertainty, discomfort, or urges are still present.
