Quiet The Overactive Mind For Better Sleep

With Sara Johnson

What happens when your body is ready for sleep… but your mind is still carrying the day? Over seven days, you'll explore a gentler way of relating to the thoughts, responsibilities, unfinished tasks, and mental noise that can follow you into bed. Rather than trying to force your mind to become quiet, you'll learn how to create more space around your thoughts, so you don't have to hold, follow, or solve everything at once. Through short teachings and guided meditations, you'll practice setting down what you've been carrying, recognizing what truly needs your attention, allowing thoughts to move without getting pulled into them, and creating a supportive transition from the doing of the day into rest. The course culminates in a longer guided sleep meditation designed to help you rest without adding more pressure around falling asleep. This course may be especially supportive if you: • Feel physically tired while your mind keeps going • Replay conversations, responsibilities, or unfinished tasks at bedtime • Find yourself trying to solve tomorrow's problems tonight • Struggle with the pressure to “clear your mind” before sleep • Want practical tools for creating more mental space at the end of the day • Prefer a gentle, low-pressure approach to rest and sleep You don't need an empty mind to rest. Sometimes, you simply need permission to stop carrying everything for a while.

Meet your Teacher

Sara Johnson is a Yoga Nidra and meditation teacher whose work centers on deep rest, nervous system restoration, and helping people create space from the invisible mental load of everyday life. Her gentle approach blends Yoga Nidra, mindfulness, breath awareness, relaxation, and restorative imagery to help participants slow down without the pressure to quiet the mind perfectly or make rest another thing to achieve. Sara has completed training in Divine Sleep (R) Yoga Nidra, meditation, mindfulness, restorative yoga, yin yoga, chair yoga, and children's yoga, and continues her education in practices that support deep rest and nervous system regulation. Drawing from her background as an educator working with learners from early childhood through adulthood, she brings warmth, structure, and an understanding of the demands that can keep the mind internally “on duty” even when the body is ready to rest.

Lesson 1

Your Mind Doesn't Have To Be Empty

Why does the mind sometimes seem to get louder the moment your head hits the pillow? In this lesson, we’ll explore why trying to force thoughts away can create even more effort at bedtime and begin practicing a different approach. Rather than trying to empty the mind, you’ll explore what it feels like to create a little more space around your thoughts and perhaps become curious about the possibility that nothing needs to be solved in this exact moment.

Lesson 2

Set It Down For Now (Meditation)

In this guided practice, you’ll explore what it feels like to temporarily set down something your mind has been carrying. Through gentle imagery, you’ll give thoughts, responsibilities, and unfinished tasks somewhere else to rest. Not because they don’t matter, but because you don’t have to hold everything all the time. Lesson 3

Why The Mind Keeps Holding On

The day may be over, but the mind can remain internally on duty… remembering, anticipating, planning, replaying, and trying to bring unfinished things to completion. In this lesson, we’ll explore why physical tiredness doesn’t always mean feeling mentally ready for sleep, and how noticing what your mind is doing can create more choice around where you place your attention.

Lesson 4

Let The Surface Settle (Meditation)

In this guided meditation, you’ll visit a peaceful koi pond and explore the possibility that movement and stillness can exist together. Just as the water’s surface can settle while the fish continue moving beneath it, thoughts can continue to arise without needing to be stopped or followed. You’ll practice allowing the mind to be as it is while creating space for moments of stillness and rest. Audio by Giacomo Franzoso, Licensed through Point of Attraction Sound

Lesson 5

Creating Space In Everyday Life

Creating space for the mind doesn’t have to begin once you’re already lying in bed. In this lesson, we’ll explore simple ways to recognize what you’re carrying, give important reminders somewhere else to live, decide what actually needs your attention right now, and create a period of deceleration between the doing of the day and sleep. These aren’t steps for a perfect bedtime routine, just options you can experiment with and make your own.

Lesson 6

Nothing To Solve Right Now (Sleep Meditation)

This longer guided sleep meditation brings together the practices you’ve explored throughout the course. You’ll be invited to soften the body, set down what you’ve been carrying, allow thoughts to move without following them, and release the need to figure anything out right now. There’s no pressure to fall asleep and no formal return at the end. The guidance gradually fades into music, leaving you with space to rest and allow sleep to arrive in its own time. Lesson 7

Returning Without Picking Everything Back Up

In our final lesson, we’ll reflect on what you’ve discovered and explore how to carry these practices forward without turning them into another list of things you need to do. You’ll be invited to keep what supports you, return to the practices that resonate, and remember that even on busy-minded nights, you can begin again. A quieter relationship with your mind doesn’t require doing everything perfectly or holding everything at once.
