Freedom From The Scroll

With Alta Lourette

Phone addiction, like most other addictions, isn't usually about the phone or thing that you are addicted to, but about distraction, dopamine, avoidance, boredom, loneliness, overwhelm, habit, a coping mechanism to fill a void, and the fear of missing out. A course that addresses the deeper reasons behind compulsive phone use can be genuinely transformative. Your attention is one of your most valuable resources. Every notification, scroll, swipe, and click asks for a piece of it. Over time, many of us find ourselves reaching for our phones automatically - not because we need to, but because we've trained ourselves to escape discomfort, fill silence, or seek stimulation. This course isn't about giving up technology. It's about rebuilding your relationship with attention. Through meditation and awareness practices, you'll learn how to pause before reaching, become comfortable with stillness, and reconnect with the present moment.

Meet your Teacher

This course is guided by Alta, an occupational therapist, yoga teacher, meditation guide, rock climber, and advocate for living a more present and intentional life. Through her work, Alta has developed a deep appreciation for the connection between attention, well-being, and how we experience our daily lives. Living close to nature and spending much of her time outdoors, she has seen firsthand how presence can transform even the simplest moments into meaningful experiences. Like many people, Alta understands the challenge of navigating a world filled with constant notifications, endless content, and devices designed to capture attention. She knows how easy it is to reach for a phone out of habit, boredom, stress, or simply because it's become part of the rhythm of everyday life. Rather than viewing technology as the problem, Alta believes the real opportunity lies in becoming more aware of our relationship with it. Through mindfulness, meditation, and self-observation, we can begin to notice our habits, understand our impulses, and make choices that better reflect how we want to spend our time and attention. This course combines practical mindfulness techniques with gentle self-inquiry to help you better understand your phone use and develop a healthier, more intentional relationship with technology. Alta's approach is grounded, compassionate, and free from judgment. The goal is not perfection, nor is it about eliminating technology from our lives. Instead, it is about reclaiming attention, creating space for what matters most, and learning how to be more present in a world full of distractions. She is delighted to have you here and looks forward to guiding you through this journey toward greater awareness, focus, and freedom.

Lesson 1

Waking Up To The Habit

During this meditation, you are invited to imagine your phone nearby and encouraged to observe what happens in the body and mind. The goal of the session is to become aware of unconscious phone use. The meditation aims to help you notice the urge to reach for your phone. Questions to explore: What does the urge feel like? Where is it felt in the body? Is there tension? Is there anticipation? What emotion exists underneath? The key insight: You cannot change a habit you cannot see.

Lesson 2

Practice The Pause

In our last session, we became aware of the habit of reaching for our phones automatically. Today, we are exploring what happens in the small moment between the urge and the action. This space may only last a second, but it is where choice begins. This is a powerful second session because now that you have seen the habit, you can begin to discover the tiny moment of freedom that exists before you act. The meditation should feel less about fighting the urge and more about building the ability to pause, notice, and choose. The goal of this session is to create space between impulse and action. The meditation's focus is on breathing whenever an urge arises. In short the practice goes as follows: When the urge appears, stop. Take three breaths. Notice the sensation. Choose consciously. The key insight of the session is that an urge is not a command.

Lesson 3

Learning To Be Bored

This session is actually a pivotal one in the course, because it begins to challenge the modern belief that every spare second needs to be occupied. The later sessions can then move into cravings, emotional avoidance, and building a healthier relationship with technology. The goal of this session is to become comfortable without stimulation. The meditation focuses on sitting quietly with absolutely nothing to do, no music, no visualisation, no entertainment. Simply observe. Notice restlessness, impatience, mental chatter, the desire to escape. The key insight is that boredom is often the doorway to creativity, insight and calm.

Lesson 4

The Dopamine Detox Meditation

This session is a natural progression from learning to sit with boredom. Now you begin to understand the craving itself—the pull toward the phone, the anticipation, the need to check. The goal is not to fight the craving, but to realise that cravings are temporary experiences that rise and fall. The goal of this session is to understand the cycle of craving and reward. The meditation focuses on observing wanting. Not getting or resisting. Just wanting. Notice how every craving rises, peaks, and falls. The key insight is that cravings are temporary. We often suffer more from reacting to them than from experiencing them.

Lesson 5

What Am I Avoiding?

This is likely the most transformative session in the course because it shifts the narrative from “How do I stop checking my phone?” to “What am I looking for when I check my phone?” That change in perspective is often where lasting behaviour change begins. Up until now, you have learned to notice the habit, create a pause, sit with boredom, and observe cravings. This session explores an important question: What am I trying not to feel? The meditation is gentle self-inquiry, because the goal is not to analyse or force difficult emotions to appear, but simply to become more aware of what might be underneath the automatic reach for the phone and explore what the phone use may be covering up. Questions you can ask yourself could be: What feeling do I avoid most? What happens when I put my phone down? What emotion appears? Allow answers to arise naturally. The key insight of this session is that the phone often protects us from feelings we haven't learned to sit with.

Lesson 6

Reclaiming Your Attention

This is a particularly important turning point in the course. The first five sessions help you understand your relationship with your phone. This session begins the rebuilding phase of training attention, choosing presence, and creating a mind that is less easily pulled away. This session moves away from simply interrupting the habit, and towards rebuilding one of the things that constant phone use often weakens: the ability to direct and sustain our attention. This session is empowering. You have already learned that you can notice urges and discomfort. Now you begin strengthening the mental muscle of focus. The key insight is that attention is trainable and that every return strengthens the mind.

Lesson 7

Presence Over Scrolling

This session is an important emotional shift in the course, because it moves away from the idea of “using my phone less” and into a much more motivating idea of “being more available for my own life.” This session is where you begin to experience what you are moving towards, rather than only what you are moving away from. After understanding your habits, urges, and attention, you now rediscover the richness of ordinary life without needing to document it, scroll through it, or escape it. The goal of this session is to reconnect with real-life experience. You can even do a mindful walk for this session where you feel your feet, the air, the movement, and hear the sounds. Experience life directly rather than through a screen.

Lesson 8

Digital Boundaries

This session is where the course becomes more practical. You have developed awareness, learned to sit with urges, boredom, and discomfort, and have started reclaiming your attention. Now the question becomes: What kind of relationship do I actually want to have with my phone? This session is about creating intentional boundaries, not strict rules or punishment, but choices that support the life you want to live. The goal of this session is to create healthier habits. In the meditation, you will visualise your ideal relationship with technology and explore when you want and don't want to use your phone, and how you want to feel after using it. Create intentional boundaries. The key insight is that freedom comes from conscious use, not total avoidance.

Lesson 9

Resting Without Escape

This session is about helping you discover the difference between distraction and genuine restoration. Many of us pick up our phones because we are tired, overwhelmed, or need a break, but endless scrolling can often leave us feeling more mentally scattered rather than truly rested. This session teaches you how to rest without immediately reaching for stimulation.

Lesson 10

Freedom From The Scroll

The final session should feel like a celebration and integration of everything you have learned. It does not suggest that you have "cured" your phone use or that you will never scroll again. Instead, it should reinforce a new relationship with technology - one based on awareness, choice, and returning to what matters.
