There is so much going on in the world that feels out of our control, and this can be overwhelming and make us feel like we are helpless, but we are all part of the incredible community that is humanity - imperfect as we are, there is a lot of cause for hope. This course will take you through a process of recognising feelings you may have in repsonse to the overwhelm of life, coming back to where you do have control, and building hope - individually and in collaboration with others. Whether you are wanting to develop your agency within your own life and daily living, or in relation to a wider context, this course was created for you. Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness can have a powerful effect on us and our energy, and seem to becoming more common, and yet, it is possible to overcome them and build hope and empowerment within ourselves. Out in the world, there is much stirring in communities, and much loving action in support of each other and this incredible world. This is a contribution into the mix, made from a deep faith in people and community.


Meet your Teacher

Bryony works with individuals and teams to build self-efficacy, a stronger sense of self, and so develop their agency, in the face of life and all it's challenges, both internal and external. She works with the whole system, not just our thinking brains, as there is so much power to be had when working with the whole of ourselves. As a coach, Mental Health First Aid instructor, Mum and as a human with her own vulnerabilities and concern for the world, she knows the impact of feelings of hopelessness and also the resources we have within us to be able to shift our state and live from a place of hope and empowerment. She has worked with activists, people in climate research, faith leaders, community engagement workers, EDI researchers and professionals and people working in social justice.

Lesson 1

Beginning With Compassion

We being by acknowledging and being with the feelings you are experiencing, so that they have space to breathe, to be named and understood, and so they are less likely to lead and overwhelm you, and so that you are more enabled to access any useful information in them for finding a way forward. Lesson 2

Coming Back To Your Power

This lesson is about coming back to where you do have control, increasing awareness around that, so that you are more able to make conscious choice about where you put your energies. Practicing this work increases our agency and self-efficacy, as well as requiring us to take ownership and responsibility for ourselves and our choices in life.

Lesson 3

Nurturing Hope Within You

Lesson 3 is focused on tapping into and practicing experiencing hope as a feeling, an energy and a place that we can live from - an anchor and compass setting - so that it becomes more and more easy to access the more we practice connecting with it and intentionally choosing it. Living with hope is a choice - not always an easy choice, which is why it needs practicing at times, but it is a choice and a powerful act of resistance. Even if it is the smallest spark of possibilty in you, or in the world around you, you can harness that and keep on nurturing it, gradually giving it more life.

Lesson 4

The Contagion Of Hope & Agency

As sociable creatures, emotions, feelings and narratives we hold and share with others are contagious. This lesson explores how you may want to connect with others, whether that is to increase your sense of agency within your day to day life and inviting in support and/or considering where you may need to set boundaries, or to increase your sense of agency in the face of a cause in this world that is close to your heart. This work is about how we look after ourselves in the face of other people's focus on what is outside of their control, and how we can harness the power of shared hope so that it becomes even more powerful in the collective experience.

I have a very deeply ingrained inner critic that I am trying to short circuit. Learning how this negativity has impacted me throughout my life was empowering. Changing the dialogue is much harder. Even hearing that self love and care are vital and not selfish is a revelation!! Baby steps…
