As a young human, spending mild, fleeting, ever-so-sweet summers at The Lake, I’d often snag my dad’s too-big-for-my-face scuba mask, cinch it ‘round my little head, and descend into the murk of the spring-fed waters…

Some afternoons I’d plunge in with fins on, in order to scoot more rapidly (and with less effort!), to zip among the lily pads and deadfall and lakeweed—in search of that near-ancient sunken boat that my brother swears that he’d spied, or to seek out the discarded tires next to that rusty boat anchor, where aqua-borne denizens seeking shelter from predators found some safety.

My swimming companions were the jade-hued darting bass and leopard-spotted pickerel…a large cohort of Rockies and Sunnies, and dark-as-squid-ink catfish moms swirling circularly, endlessly, over their nests, never tiring. The salamanders would serenely ascend for their periodic trips for air, and the pollywogs would skitter to just under the lake-muck as soon as they sensed my presence.

Sometimes, while below the surface, you’d hear the attenuated whine of a powerboat’s motor, as water skiers signaled to their respective pilots to “GO!,” resulting in snapping taut lines that would whip them around this active freshwater oasis.

That place, and those times, approximated a sort of idyllic paradise.
And this track, right here, is •exactly• what it all sounded like, distilled down to its essence, all layered and gently blended together.
What a true treat.
